SUMMARY:Story Time: Dune Dragons
DESCRIPTION:Author Gretchen Rose will join us for Story Time at Cottage Book Shop in Glen Arbor on Wednesday\, Aug. 14th at 11am featuring her book “Dune Dragons.” \n \nIn search of a new land–some place where they may be free of man’s violence and wars–a colony of dragons sets out on a great journey across a vast ocean. The dragons settle in what is known today as Northern Michigan\, and they are delighted with their new home. Dune warrens provide the perfect shelter for their long winter naps\, and there are plenty of delicious fruits and nuts to eat. In the spring\, the frozen lake thaws\, and great sheets of ice pile up on shore\, creating iridescent towers for younglings Chryllis and Jilly to play upon. During the lazy days of summer\, the two best friends compete in games with the woodland animals or dune-slide into the turquoise lake\, while Dra teens soar overhead on upward drafts. In the fall\, when the trees are ablaze\, there are cherry-pit-spitting contests\, and popcorn popping with dragon breath. But when a ragtag band of humans comes ashore to establish a settlement\, the idyllic life of the Dune Dragons is threatened. (Ages 6 and up)\n \nDune Dragons\, By Gretchen Rose\, Indigo River Publishing $19.95

SUMMARY:Artist in Resident talk: Patricia Schaefer
DESCRIPTION:Painter Patricia Schaefer will discuss a new series of paintings that explore the human body and bodies of water she plans to create as part of her 2019 artist’s residency with the Glen Arbor Arts Center. The presentation is August 30\, noon at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nEach of the GAAC’s artists-in-residence gives a conversational overview of their residency. These presentations offer a chance to hear about the resident’s project\, and the process they experienced during their two-week stay. Schaefer’s GAAC residency was a chance to explore the overlay of the human body in the landscape – as well as ask questions about how human bodies and bodies of water intersect\, and explore the political\, environmental land existential questions that study prompts. San Francisco\, California\, is Schaefer’s home base. \nThe GAAC artist-in-residence presentation are free and open to the public. For more information go to\nGlenArborArt.org

SUMMARY:Fiber: Visual Art Survey Program
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center takes a short look back\, and a long look forward\, at contemporary fiber and textile arts on Sunday\, October 6\, 2 pm. This visual survey is part of the GAAC’s exhibition Fiber Without Borders\, and is presented without charge. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager and studio fiber artist\, will facilitate the program. \nIn the late 1960s the Museum of Modern Art broke new ground with Wall Hangings\, the first major museum exhibition focused on the work of 28 artist working in fiber and textile materials. In the subsequent decades\, the fiber arts have taken a great leap forward to become one of the most expressive\, versatile media in the contemporary art world. No longer viewed in purely functional and domestic terms\, the fiber arts have continued to push definitions\, materials and techniques in the last 60 years. \nThe medium easily crosses old boundaries – moving from the home front to comment and reflect on social changes\, politics\, feminist issues\, as well as the dividing line between art and craft. Fiber Without Borders continues through November 7. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. For more information\, go to GlenArborArt.org
