SUMMARY:Star Party June 14 from 9 to 11
DESCRIPTION:The sky is the limit at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.  Join park rangers and astronomers from the Grand Traverse Astronomical Society (GTAS) on Saturday\, July 14 at the Dune Climb parking lot. On that date\, two events will offer you opportunities to focus on the sky. The first event is from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will allow visitors to safely view our closest star\, the sun\, using a solar telescope. The second event will be from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. Feel free to hike up the dunes at the Dune Climb during the event\, watch a sunset at 9:29 p.m.\, and rejoin the rangers and astronomers in the parking lot at the base of the dunes. \nTake advantage of the very young moon to relax under the stars\, view distant celestial objects\, observe Venus\, Jupiter\, and Saturn. Mars will make its appearance around 11:00 p.m. \n \nEach event will feature drop-in stations for you to visit at your leisure. Be sure to stop by the ranger greeter table in the parking lot at the Dune Climb for more information about the stations and their locations. Visit with Friends of Sleeping Bear! We will have a table next to the NPS table.\n \nAt the Dune Climb\, please park in the row furthest from the dunes with your headlights facing M-109. Overflow parking\, within easy walking distance to the Dune Climb\, is in the Great Lakes Picnic Area. The picnic area entrance is located just south of the entrance to the Dune Climb. Follow the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail from the parking area to the Dune Climb. Volunteers will be assisting with parking at both locations.\n \nAll sky programs offered by the National Lakeshore are free. Participants need only purchase the park entrance pass or have an annual pass displayed in their vehicle to join in the fun. Programs will be cancelled if the sky is not visible due to weather conditions. The decision to cancel is usually made two hours in advance. Please call 231-326-4700\, ext. 5005\, for a voicemail message with the decision. \n \nFor all evening astronomy events\, bring a flashlight for the walk back to your car and bug spray\, if needed. You are welcome to bring your own binoculars\, beach chairs\, and blankets for a more comfortable experience\, and water is always recommended for National Park Service (NPS) programs. Park rangers and GTAS staff will wear red glow necklaces or bracelets at the events. For more information about the GTAS\, go to http://www.gtastro.org\n \nThis event is the perfect opportunity to “Find Your Park” in the stars. Starry night skies and natural darkness are important components of the special places the NPS protects. National parks hold some of the last remaining harbors of darkness and provide an excellent opportunity to experience this endangered resource.

SUMMARY:More than Just a View: Water Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:A panel of water activists and advocates talk about how the lakes\, streams and ponds in our region are “More Than Just A View\,” on Sunday\, July 15\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This conversational interview will be conducted by GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal. \nThe “More Than Just A View” panel is: Jim Lively\, of the Groundwork Center; Tom Nelson\, executive Director of The Leelanau Conservancy; and environmental attorney Jim Olson\, founder of For Love Of Water/FLOW. The July 15 discussion offers an opportunity to hear more about how the health and safety of Lake Michigan is endangered by the Line 5 oil pipe\, the threats to underground aquafers from bottled water\, and the impacts of 21 st Century lawn care on local lakes and streams. \nThis conversational discussion is presented as part of the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Water = Life = Art.” The exhibition continues through August 4 in the GAAC gallery. There is no charge. For more information go to: GlenArborArt.org

SUMMARY:Visual voyage of the Discovery boat
DESCRIPTION:Glen Arbor watershed biologist Rob Karner takes Glen Arbor Arts Center visitors on a visual voyage aboard the good ship Discovery on Tuesday\, July 17\, 10 am.\, in the GAAC gallery\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. Karner captains Discovery\, a 22-foot pontoon boat that’s part of the Glen Lake Association’s water monitoring program. The July 17 program offers a look at its role in studying the Glen Lakes’ ecology and health. The presentation is free. \nThe Discovery Boat Program provides the public with a hands-on educational opportunity. When the Discovery launches\, Karner takes guests on a cruise that engages riders in visual observation\, water sampling\, and getting to know the plants and animals who also call the Glen Lakes their home. Although he’ll be high and dry in the GAAC gallery for the July 17 presentation\, Karner will illustrate the work Discovery and the Glen Lake Association are doing in the service of these beloved lakes. \nThis presentation is offered as part of the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Water = Life = Art.” The exhibition continues through August 4 in the GAAC gallery. SUMMARY:The Art of Water with Hank Feeley
DESCRIPTION:Artists have been inspired by H2O since its first surprising visualization in the prehistoric African Sahara. Artist Hank Feeley springboards off of this history and into “The Art of Water in 28 ½ Minutes\,” July 19\, 11 am in the Glen Arbor Arts Center gallery\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. Cost of the presentation is $10 GAAC members and $15 non-members. \nIn a lively and fast-pace presentation\, Feeley explores how artists have invoked the water muse as symbolic of such human concerns as life\, immortality\, purification/cleansing\, passage/transport\, revitalization/refreshment\, destruction and\, of course\, beauty. This wide- ranging presentation will cover prehistoric visualizations of water\, painting from Leonardo to today’s David Hockney\, sculpture from Bernini to Jaume Plensa\, installation art\, water as a physical material\, architecture\, water inspired music and dance\, digital art\, poetry\, performance art\, and video and film.  \nFeeley is an author\, painter\, and sculptor whose second book Painting the Joy of Sleeping Bear County was published in 2016. He is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Harvard Business School. “The Art of Water in 28 ½ Minutes” is offered as part of the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Water = Life = Art\,” which continues through August 4. SUMMARY:Discovery Days Pt 2 - Leelanau County Poor Farm
DESCRIPTION:Discovery Days – Leelanau County Poor Farm \nSeeking: Memories\, Photos & Stories • Life at the Leelanau County Poor Farm \nSecond Discovery Day with the Coleman Family \nKasson Township Hall\, 10988 S. Newman Rd.\, Maple City \nSaturday\, July 28th\, 10 – noon \n\nLooking for any memorabilia about the Leelanau County Poor Farm\, located west of Maple City on Burdickville Road\, across from Myles Kimmerly Park. Between 1900 and 1960\, this working farm housed up to 20 residents at a time who helped to operate the farm. In addition\, the farm had a managing family living there and some hired help. This farm was referred to as the County Farm by the community. \nThis is valuable local history in the process of being preserving. We are looking for any stories\, photos or items from this farm which was referred to as the County Farm by the community. You are our link to documenting this important history. If you have stories and would consider sharing we would like you to join us at Kasson Township Hall for our first Discovery Day. With your permission we would like to scan and document these photos\, take notes and/or audio record your recollections. This information then will be organized\, catalogued\, stored and made publicly available at the Leelanau Historical Society Museum as a part of the Leelanau County Poor Farm Collection. Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society is hosting this event in junction with Empire Area History Group and Leelanau Historical Museum. \nThe second Discovery Day will be held with the Coleman Family on July 28\, 2018 from 10am to 12 noon also at Kasson Township Hall. Their relatives George and Mabel (Ashmore) Coleman managed the farm from 1925 to 1960. These grandchildren have fond and detailed memories of their time spent every weekend at the farm. They look forward to sharing these stories and their family photographs that day. \nThese events have been partially funded by Michigan Humanities Council and National Humanities Endowment. \nFurther information\, or if are you unable to attend but still want to add your memories\, please contact Barbara Siepker 231-334-4395 siepker@aol.com \n

SUMMARY:Romancing the Heartland: American Regionalism
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center presents “Romancing the Heartland: American Regionalism\,” a visual exploration of the work of the Regionalists\, a uniquely American art movement that flourished in the years between the world wars. This brown bag art history presentation is Wednesday\, October 17\, noon at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. Linda Young\,\nKalamazoo Institute of Arts Director of Museum Education [retired]\, leads this hour-long survey. \nPart of a larger movement\, the American Scene painters\, American Regionalism focused on scenes of rural America — even as that way of life was fast disappearing. Not being part of a coordinated movement\, Regional artists depicted and struck themes of rural conservation. Presented as part of the GAAC’s exhibition agriCULTURE: Barnyards and Farmscapes\, Linda Young’s talk will highlight the work of Grant Wood\, Thomas Hart Benton\, John Steuart Curry and others. \nAdmission is $10 for GAAC members\, $15 for nonmembers. \nPlease register in advance: GlenArborArt.org. agriCULTURE is supported in part by the Michigan Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The exhibition runs November 9 – December 21 at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nArtists who enjoy a residency in the AIR program often make a gift of work to the GAAC at the end of their stay. It is a practice that was initiated more than a decade ago\, and has allowed the GAAC to build a permanent collection and a record of AIRs’ work. This program of artists’ residencies began in the 1990s at the initiation of the late Suzanne Wilson\, one of the GAAC’s\nfounders. Wilson handpicked visual artists for the program\, and found area friends to house them. Today\, a committee of seven volunteers administer the program. The GAAC offers seven residencies each year from May to October. A selection of work by Suzanne Wilson will also be part of this exhibition. \nFor more information about these activities\, go to GlenArborArt and click on EVENTS. In November and December\, the GAAC is open Monday through Friday 9 am – 3:30 pm\, and noon\n– 4 pm on Sundays.
