Volunteers will be assisting with parking at both locations.\n \nAll sky programs offered by the National Lakeshore are free. Participants need only purchase the park entrance pass or have an annual pass displayed in their vehicle to join in the fun. Programs will be cancelled if the sky is not visible due to weather conditions. The decision to cancel is usually made two hours in advance. Please call 231-326-4700\, ext. 5005\, for a voicemail message with the decision. \n \nFor all evening astronomy events\, bring a flashlight for the walk back to your car and bug spray\, if needed. You are welcome to bring your own binoculars\, beach chairs\, and blankets for a more comfortable experience\, and water is always recommended for National Park Service (NPS) programs. Park rangers and GTAS staff will wear red glow necklaces or bracelets at the events. For more information about the GTAS\, go to http://www.gtastro.org\n \nThis event is the perfect opportunity to “Find Your Park” in the stars. Starry night skies and natural darkness are important components of the special places the NPS protects. National parks hold some of the last remaining harbors of darkness and provide an excellent opportunity to experience this endangered resource.

SUMMARY:More than Just a View: Water Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:A panel of water activists and advocates talk about how the lakes\, streams and ponds in our region are “More Than Just A View\,” on Sunday\, July 15\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This conversational interview will be conducted by GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal. \nThe “More Than Just A View” panel is: Jim Lively\, of the Groundwork Center; Tom Nelson\, executive Director of The Leelanau Conservancy; and environmental attorney Jim Olson\, founder of For Love Of Water/FLOW. The July 15 discussion offers an opportunity to hear more about how the health and safety of Lake Michigan is endangered by the Line 5 oil pipe\, the threats to underground aquafers from bottled water\, and the impacts of 21 st Century lawn care on local lakes and streams. \nThis conversational discussion is presented as part of the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Water = Life = Art.” The exhibition continues through August 4 in the GAAC gallery. SUMMARY:Visual voyage of the Discovery boat
DESCRIPTION:Glen Arbor watershed biologist Rob Karner takes Glen Arbor Arts Center visitors on a visual voyage aboard the good ship Discovery on Tuesday\, July 17\, 10 am.\, in the GAAC gallery\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. Karner captains Discovery\, a 22-foot pontoon boat that’s part of the Glen Lake Association’s water monitoring program. SUMMARY:The Art of Water with Hank Feeley
DESCRIPTION:Artists have been inspired by H2O since its first surprising visualization in the prehistoric African Sahara. Artist Hank Feeley springboards off of this history and into “The Art of Water in 28 ½ Minutes\,” July 19\, 11 am in the Glen Arbor Arts Center gallery\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. Cost of the presentation is $10 GAAC members and $15 non-members. \nIn a lively and fast-pace presentation\, Feeley explores how artists have invoked the water muse as symbolic of such human concerns as life\, immortality\, purification/cleansing\, passage/transport\, revitalization/refreshment\, destruction and\, of course\, beauty. This wide- ranging presentation will cover prehistoric visualizations of water\, painting from Leonardo to today’s David Hockney\, sculpture from Bernini to Jaume Plensa\, installation art\, water as a physical material\, architecture\, water inspired music and dance\, digital art\, poetry\, performance art\, and video and film.  \nFeeley is an author\, painter\, and sculptor whose second book Painting the Joy of Sleeping Bear County was published in 2016. He is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Harvard Business School. “The Art of Water in 28 ½ Minutes” is offered as part of the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Water = Life = Art\,” which continues through August 4. SUMMARY:Discovery Days Pt 2 - Leelanau County Poor Farm
DESCRIPTION:Discovery Days – Leelanau County Poor Farm \nSeeking: Memories\, Photos & Stories • Life at the Leelanau County Poor Farm \nSecond Discovery Day with the Coleman Family \nKasson Township Hall\, 10988 S. Newman Rd.\, Maple City \nSaturday\, July 28th\, 10 – noon \n\nLooking for any memorabilia about the Leelanau County Poor Farm\, located west of Maple City on Burdickville Road\, across from Myles Kimmerly Park. Between 1900 and 1960\, this working farm housed up to 20 residents at a time who helped to operate the farm. In addition\, the farm had a managing family living there and some hired help. This farm was referred to as the County Farm by the community. \nThis is valuable local history in the process of being preserving. We are looking for any stories\, photos or items from this farm which was referred to as the County Farm by the community. You are our link to documenting this important history. If you have stories and would consider sharing we would like you to join us at Kasson Township Hall for our first Discovery Day. With your permission we would like to scan and document these photos\, take notes and/or audio record your recollections. This information then will be organized\, catalogued\, stored and made publicly available at the Leelanau Historical Society Museum as a part of the Leelanau County Poor Farm Collection. Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society is hosting this event in junction with Empire Area History Group and Leelanau Historical Museum. \nThe second Discovery Day will be held with the Coleman Family on July 28\, 2018 from 10am to 12 noon also at Kasson Township Hall. Their relatives George and Mabel (Ashmore) Coleman managed the farm from 1925 to 1960. These grandchildren have fond and detailed memories of their time spent every weekend at the farm. They look forward to sharing these stories and their family photographs that day. \nThese events have been partially funded by Michigan Humanities Council and National Humanities Endowment. \nFurther information\, or if are you unable to attend but still want to add your memories\, please contact Barbara Siepker 231-334-4395 siepker@aol.com \n
