SUMMARY:Sculpture: Architecture\, Artifact and Totem
DESCRIPTION:Sculpture – architectural and totemic – comes to Center Gallery for an extended stay. The work of artists Larry Fox and Van Wilson is on display Sept. 18-Oct. 11. A 6 p.m. reception for the artists opens the show. \n  \nFox constructs non-representational wall compositions from wood and canvas. The Omena artist is known locally and nationally for the dimensional\, dynamic shapes he constructs\, and for the complex surfaces he creates from layers of acrylic paint. Fox’s work is found in private collections as well as on the walls of corporate enterprises. \n  \nWilson’s freestanding\, totemic sculptures are carved from wood or assembled from metal and other found objects. The Maple City artist grew up in West Texas and brought with him a love of crows\, the traditional messengers of the spirit world. Wilson takes a playful approach to creating his totems\, mixing and matching and stacking shapes and creatures that he has painted in eye-popping colors. \n  \nFor more information\, please call Center Gallery\, 231/334-3179.

SUMMARY:The New Collectors: Modern Women\, Modern Art\, Modern Museums
DESCRIPTION:In 1913\, the Armory Show introduced Avant garde art to a mostly unsuspecting public. The works were panned and banned.  A new breed of women patrons\, however\, embraced this new direction in art and began collecting in earnest.  The American public would become the benefactors of their collections. \nJoin museum educator\, Linda Young\, Wednesday\, November 4 from 2- 3:30 pm at the GAAA\, as she continues her focus on women collectors and the museums that would benefit from their discerning eyes. Baltimore sisters Etta and Claribel Cone amassed an impressive collection of paintings by Matisse and Picasso. New York socialite Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney encouraged emerging American artists\, eventually opening her own museum of contemporary art. And a trio of progressive women patrons led the effort to open New York’s Museum of Modern Art. \nPlease call the Glen Arbor Art Association at 231-334-6112 or visit our website at glenarborart.org to register for this lecture. Pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:Talk About Art: Animator Jim Feeley

The series moves this year to Sunday afternoons from its traditional Thursday evening time slot. “Talk About Art” interviews are free of charge.
