SUMMARY:Yarn Bomb Installation Day
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 15 | 9:30 am \nYarn bombs are set to drop on the Glen Arbor Arts Center on Sunday\, September 15\, 9:30 am. Volunteers are needed to help install hand-knit “bombs” on trees in the GAAC’s backyard grove as part of the upcoming exhibition “Fiber Without Borders\,” a juried exhibition of contemporary fiber art. Yarn bombing is friendly community event\, and a form of temporary street art. Yarn in any form (knit\, crochet\, latch hook\, cross stitch\, amigurumi or simple wrapping) adorns an object [e.g. tree trunk or limbs\, poles\, waste can] in the public environment. While other forms of graffiti may be decorative\, socio-political commentary\, or vandalism\, yarn bombing was initially almost exclusively about reclaiming and personalizing sterile or cold public places. The start of this movement has been attributed to Houston resident Magda Sayeg\, who says she first got the idea in 2005 when she covered the door handle of her boutique with a custom-made cozy. \nVolunteers of any age are invited to help with the yarn bomb installation. To volunteer\, call the GAAC\, 231/334-6112. “Fiber Without Borders” runs September 13 – November 7. For more information go to\nGlenArborArt.org. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.
