SUMMARY:By Hand Project
DESCRIPTION:Human hands with their dexterous\, opposable thumbs have allowed us to innovate\, to use tools\, to become nimble\, skillful\, creative\, and artful makers. The Glen Arbor Arts Center By Hand project is a consideration of the myriad ways in which the human hand is intrinsic to creative work; and a demonstration of what human hands can make. The By Hand project runs March 29 – May 30\, 2024\, and offers a range of programs that explore this theme through the visual\, performing\, architectural\, and literary arts. \nIn a time of machine dominance\, there is case to be made that right now is the perfect moment to celebrate making-by-hand. The By Hand project challenges this techno-centric time with these programs: \n•	By Hand\, the exhibition\, March 29 – May 30\n•	Coffee With the Authors | The Letter League\, April 6\, 1 pm\n•	By Hand: Architecture\, April 13\, 1 pm\n•	By Hand: Making Music\, April 20\, 1 pm\n•	By Hand: Artificial Intelligence In The Arts\, May 4\, 1 pm \nFor more information about all the By Hand programs go to GlenArborArt.org / EXHIBITS. All programs are free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:Coffee with the Authors: The Letter League
DESCRIPTION:Coffee With The Authors is a live\, conversational interview with local and regional authors about the craft and process of writing. The 2024 series kicks off April 6\, 1 am at the Glen Arbor Arts Center with Heather Spooner\, owner of Ampersand Lettering Lab\, an art and hand lettering business in Traverse City. Spooner will talk about The Letter League\, an adult pen pal project she created to encourage writing letters by hand during the COVID pandemic. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager\, leads the conversation. \nThe Letter League is the story of finding human connection during the pandemic. When Spooner launched the idea in April 2020\, the response was immediate\, and enthusiastic. In that time\, Spooner has connected more than 550 letter writers from around the world with one another. The Letter League also caught the attention of Los Angeles filmmaker Michelle Boyaner of Greenie Films\, and a documentary about “stories of connection in a disconnected time” was created. During Coffee With The Authors Spooner will talk about hand-written letters sent by the post office\, and the documentary’s April 27\, Traverse City premiere at the Dennos Museum Center. \nThis Coffee With The Authors interview is part of the GAAC’s By Hand project\, an exploration of making and creating by hand in a time of machine dominance. The project runs March 29 – May 30. Read more about By Hand at GlenArborArt.org /EXHIBITS. Coffee With The Authors is supported by the Cottage Book Shop and the Glen Lake Community Library. It is offered without charge. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:Architecture BY HAND
DESCRIPTION:In an age of machine dominance\, the Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates the human hand in its By Hand project. On April 13\, Traverse City architect Ken Richmond\, and Steve Stier\, a Benzie County resident who is an expert in historic barn restoration\, talk about the relevance of hand work in the creation of contemporary and historic architecture. The program begins at 1 pm.\nWhen Richmond attended architecture school at Notre Dame University in the 1980s\, he drafted all his structures with pencil and paper\, a practice he continues today. Stier\, a driving force behind the restoration of the Leelanau Poor Farm Barn\, focuses on barns built in the period between 1840 and 1940. He has built a career restoring buildings designed and erected before modern technology and computer-assisted design. During the program\, the conversation will touch on why both these people continue to work by hand\, how the human hand enhances the creative process\, and remains relevant and essential to human life.\nThis By Hand program is free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. The By Hand project runs March 29 – May 30\, and is comprised of a series of visual art exhibitions and community conversations. The By Hand project enjoys the support of a Michigan Humanities Bridging Michigan grant. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org / EVENTS.

SUMMARY:Music BY HAND
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates human handwork in its By Hand project. On April 20\, musicians Martha Meek and Laura Hood will talk about the value and joy of making music by hand. Meek is the director of the Martha Meek Music Studio in Suttons Bay. Hood teaches music\, and chairs The Leelanau School art department. The program begins at 1 pm.\nContemporary music is often about consuming\, rather than creating\, and more often the result of digital enhancements and electronic additions. In this program Meek and Hood will talk about what happens in the brain when people make music\, how playing an instrument – whether stringed\, brass or produced with the vocal cords – enhances and enriches life. A group of Leelanau School music students will also take part in the discussion\, and talk about their experience as hand music makers.\nThis By Hand program is free.

SUMMARY:AI + The Arts: Just A Tool?
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center celebrates human handwork in a time of machine dominance in its By Hand project. On May 4\, the GAAC will host a panel discussion of generative artificial intelligence [AI]\, and its incursion into the arts. Visual artists Randy Melick\, Tim Nielsen\, Rufus Snoddy\, and writer Bob Butz will talk about the role of AI in their work. The discussion begins at 1 pm and is facilitated by Anne Stanton\, National Writers Series executive director\, and Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager.\nIt is often asserted that AI is just a tool. In the May 4 discussion\, the panel will explore a range of questions including their experience with AI; and weigh in on whether or not it’s a benign “tool.” Is AI art “art”? How does AI change the way we understand the visual and literary arts? What purpose does AI serve in the arts? What’s the purpose of turning over human creative work to a machine? What are the harms? Melick and Snoddy teach visual art and art history at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. Nielsen is the former president of Nielsen Design Group\, Traverse City\, and now a studio practitioner. Butz worked for 20 years as a freelance writer\, and is now the Senior Creative Copywriter and Creative Strategist for the Wisconsin-based Vortex Optics.\n.\nThis By Hand program is free. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. The By Hand project runs March 29 – May 30. The By Hand project enjoys the support of a Michigan Humanities Bridging Michigan grant. It is comprised of a series of visual art exhibitions and community conversations. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org / EVENTS.
