DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center hosts Leelanau County writers Jacob Wheeler and Anne-Marie Oomen for coffee and conversation about their newly published nonfiction books. The Coffee With The Authors book discussion is November 26\, 11 am at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. Both writers have won recognition for their writing\, but their writing springs from different sources: Anne-Marie’s from personal history; Jacob’s from deeply researched journalism. Both writers will talk about the process of making\, and publishing their books. \nIn his second book\, Angel of the Garbage Dump\, Jacob Wheeler executes an in-depth\, feeling portrait of Maine native\, the late Hanley Denning\, who saw poverty and desperation in its ugliest form\, and refused to turn a blind eye. A former track star at Bowdoin College\, Denning was struck by what she saw at a city dump in Guatemala: garbage pickers competing with vultures for the food dumped by trucks\, toddlers playing amidst rats. Wheeler details Denning’s efforts to create Safe Passage\, a nonprofit organization focused on bringing significant and lasting change to the garbage pickers and their children. Wheeler is editor and publisher of the Glen Arbor Sun\, which he founded in 1996; adjunct faculty with Northwestern Michigan College; and adviser to the staff of NMC’s White Pine Press. \nAs Long As I Know You narrates Anne-Marie Oomen’s journey to finally knowing her mother – as her mother’s memories are being erased by dementia. It explores how humor and compassion grow belatedly between a mother and daughter who don’t much like each other. It’s a personal map to find a mother who may have been there all along\, then losing her again in the time of Covid. As Long As I Know You is the recipient of the Sue William Silverman Prize for Creative Nonfiction. Modeled after Paul Harvey’s famous radio program: And Now You Know the Rest of the Story\, there is so much more to tell than what fit into the pages of our best-selling book. After a short introduction of the book\, the following featured speakers will share funny and informative insight into our area history… \n* Mike Bolton is a 4th generation resident and Large Animal Veterinarian. He will share “The County Line (and a River) Runs Through It! A Brief History of the Centennial Manning Farm.”\n* Dave Taghon\, an Empire resident all his life\, has been instrumental in the creation of the Empire Area Museum. He will talk about Empire history\, what’s preserved in the museum\, and the museum’s 50th anniversary.\n* Amy Ellison\, a local massage therapist\, will share behind-the-scenes stories of what it was like being a “clerkette” for her grandmother\, Elsie Warnes. Elsie taught her young employees by sprinkling life’s lessons with lots of laughter.\n* Dale DeVries is a retired Michigan school teacher\, who has spent his retirement years photographing landscapes and wildlife. He will display some of his popular photos of the Sleeping Bear Dunes area and will offer photography tips to help you capture your own memories.\n* Kerry Kelly\, retired from DOW Chemical and current Chair of the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes will round out the program with park and Friends updates. DESCRIPTION:A guided walk-and-talk through the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s Telling Stories and A Feral Housewife exhibitions takes place February 11 and\, again\, on March 4. Both programs begin at 11 am. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager\, leads a conversational tour of these exhibits about visual storytelling. \nNo one walks into a gallery and fully understands what the exhibiting artists intended to say with their work. During this one-hour program\, Bearup-Neal will talk about the both exhibits’ theme; shed light on artists’ statements; and explore how artists use materials to communicate meaning\, or make an idea more dynamic. You can still join the community on the decks of Boonedocks for the Chili Cookoff from Noon-3pm on Saturday! \nWinterfest: Chili Cook-Off and Perch Fishing Contest\nWinterfest\, the anticipated\, fun mid-winter event takes place annually\, the Saturday of President’s Day weekend. The event includes a perch fishing contest followed by chili cook off on the deck of Boonedocks restaurant in Glen Arbor on Saturday\, February 18th\, 2023 from Noon-3pm. \nWinners will be crowned as the event wraps up around 3pm. Proceeds from this event are given out on senior scholarship night at Glen Lake School\, to deserving students to help defray college tuition. This is a family friendly event\, just be sure to dress for the weather. \nAdmission to the chili cook-off is $10 per person\, which includes unlimited chili samples. $5 for kids ages 6-12 and seniors 70+\, kids under 6 enter for free. \nThe Sportsman Shop hosts the annual Perch Fishing Contest as either a spectator or participant. Sign up will take place at the Sportsman Shop in Glen Arbor\, MI from 6-7:30am. Ice fishing takes place on the Glen Lakes all morning. Bring your catches back to weigh in at the Sportsman Shop promptly by 1pm. Entry fee for the Perch tournament is $20. ($10 goes to chili cook-off and $10 to tournament. 100% pay out.)
