SUMMARY:Plein Air Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Painters from across Michigan and the Midwest will converge on Glen Arbor August 4\, 5\, and 6  for the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s 13th Plein Air Weekend.  \nThis year the event will be highlighted by three outdoor painting competitions and two exhibitions of original work. The Sundowner is Thursday\, August 4th. The artists will work to capture the sunset. The Quick Draw is Friday\, August 5. This year’s theme asks artists to paint their interpretation of “Pastoral  Life: Capturing Images of Barns\, Farms\, and Fields.” The public is welcome to watch the artists in action. Quick Draw and Sundowner paintings will be on view and for sale at the Glen Arbor Town Hall\, 6394 W. Western Avenue/M-22\, on Friday\, August 5\, 5 – 6:30 pm. Glen Arbor artist Barb Cochran will judge the paintings. There will be cash prizes. \nThe weekend’s culminating event\, the Paint Out exhibit and sale\, is Saturday\, August 6. It features work by 70 artists who registered early to be included in this all-day painting event. The evening viewing and sale is 5:30 – 7:30 pm at the Glen Arbor Township Hall. More than 100 works of art will be exhibited and offered for sale on a first-come basis (at the sound of the gong at 6 pm).  Grand Rapids art gallery owners\, Scott and Linda LaFontsee\, will judge and award cash prizes for the paintings including the Amy L. Clark-Carels $1\,000 first place prize. Entry to Saturday evening’s show and sale is ticketed. Tickets will be $10 and and available at the door. Children under 12 are free. \nThe Plein Air Weekend is a major fundraising event for the Glen Arbor Art Center. SUMMARY:Summer Children's Events at Glen Lake Library
DESCRIPTION:The final two programs for Glen Lake Library’s Summer Reading Program will be held on August 4 and August 11th at 11:00 AM. The program on August 4th will host children’s author and illustrator Lori Taylor. She will share stories of sea monsters from long ago and even bring along a couple of live “sea monsters”. Participants will learn to draw water critters and create their own “sea monster” art. Lori will also have her children’s chapter books for sale after her presentation. On August 11th we welcome Skye\, a Welsh Corgi to our library as part of our Dog Gone summer program. We will feature some dog gone good dog stories\, Aunt Lulu and Harry\, the Dirty Dog and Bark\, George\, after which kids can make their own dog gone fun puppet and read a story to Skye. DESCRIPTION:Friday\, August 12 6:30 – 8:30 pm Thoreson Farm\nSleeping Bear Stories: Two Lost Tales of the Past \nA performance of music and dramatization of two historic tales within Sleeping Bear about the first settlers of Port Oneida\, the Burfiends\, and the lost community of Aral. Performed by Anne-Marie Oomen and Beach Bards and Co. Anne-Marie is a local author and former Creative Writing Department Chair at Interlochen Center for the Arts. The Beach Bards led by Norm Wheeler have been performing in song and prose weekly for years in Glen Arbor and are joined by Dave Early and musicians Gary Worden\, John Phillips\, and Michael Sullivan. *Bring a blanket or chair. Come early and picnic on the grounds. \nBrought to you by Preserve Historic Sleeping Bear with a grant from the Michigan Humanities Council\, and the Port Oneida Fair Committee. This is a gift to the community.[There is no cost for the event\, but visitors must have a park entrance pass or an annual pass displayed in their vehicle. Park passes can be purchased at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire\, open daily.]\nThoreson farm is located at 3694 S Thoreson Rd\, off of M-22 3 miles north of Glen Arbor and just west of Port Oneida Road.

Once again\, visitors are invited to step back in time at the two-day event and experience life as it was in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The fair is held at six of the historic farmsteads in Port Oneida. Each farm has a variety of artists\, crafts\, food\, and activities for visitors.
