SUMMARY:Star Party at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
DESCRIPTION:The sky is the limit at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore (National Lakeshore).  Explore the Milky Way\, Mars\, and Saturn with park rangers and astronomers in the Dune Climb parking lot on Saturday\, September 3 from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. Experience the late summer night sky in near total darkness. \nDuring the event\, Grand Traverse Astronomical Society (GTAS) astronomer Bob Moler will be presenting a talk on the topic of “100 Years of Recognizing and Studying the Andromeda Nebula as a Galaxy.”  The talk will begin at 9:05 p.m.\, just after the 9:00 p.m. welcome\, and will last about 15 minutes. Visitors are asked to park in the row farthest from the dunes\, with headlights facing M-109. \nThe event will be cancelled if the stars are not visible due to cloudy weather conditions. The decision to cancel will be made two hours in advance of the event; please call 231-326-4700\, ext. 5005\, for a voicemail message with the decision. \nAll sky programs offered by the National Lakeshore are free. Participants need only purchase the Park Entrance Pass or have an Annual Pass displayed in their vehicle to join in the fun. Passes may be purchased at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire and cost $15 per vehicle for seven days. \nVisitors are encouraged to bring a flashlight for the walk back to their cars\, and should bring bug spray if desired. Visitors may also want to bring binoculars\, beach chairs\, blankets and water.

SUMMARY:InstaMeet At Port Oneida Rural Historic District at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 3\, 2016\, at 4:00 p.m.\, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will host a free InstaMeet event to celebrate the National Park Service (NPS) centennial. An InstaMeet is an interactive\, in-park event\, allowing visitors meet up\, take photos\, and get to know each other. Once the visitors meet\, they will accompany a park ranger on a historic building tour. \nVisitors will meet at 4:00 p.m. at the Olsen Farm History Center at 3164 West Harbor Highway in the Port Oneida Rural Historic District of the Lakeshore. (For GPS purposes\, persons should use Maple City as the location.) Visitors and rangers will then car caravan to the Ole Olsen house. \nThere\, they will discuss the history of the farmhouse and historic district with a ranger\, as well as sharing stories with each other.  The buildings will be opened so that visitors can see inside. \nParticipants do not have to be an Instagram user to join in the fun; anyone is welcome to participate in the ranger-led hike.  Participants should prepare to be outside for about one hour\, dress for the weather\, and wear comfortable hiking or athletic shoes. \nVisitors are encouraged to bring a camera or a smartphone to capture images during the event\, and are may share their photos on social media using the hashtag #SLBEInstameet. \nAll InstaMeet events are free with a park pass. Passes can be purchased at the Philip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire\, open seven days a week from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Passes cost $15/vehicle for seven days. \nIf you would like to attend but have other plans\, you can follow Sleeping Bear National Lakeshore on Instagram @SleepingBearNPS. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, September 17\, visitors to Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\n(National Lakeshore) can become citizen scientists for the day by joining the park’s quest to\nshowcase the biodiversity of the National Lakeshore through a BioBlitz. The BioBlitz is a time for\nscientists\, students\, teachers\, families\, and park visitors to team up to identify as many organisms as\npossible. \nInterested visitors should sign up ahead of time to choose a hike with an expert\, allowing them to\nlearn about the intriguing plant and animal species they might find. All hikers will meet at the Dune\nClimb parking lot at their assigned time. \nSign-up details are available at\nhttps://ceruleancenter.org/bioblitz. Visitors may also use the iNaturalist smartphone app to explore\nthe National Lakeshore on their own. \nThe Lakeshore’s event is called “Blitz the Bear\,” and marks the launch of the Great Lakes Bioblitz\,\nan initiative led by the National Lakeshore’s partner\, the Cerulean Center\, to study biodiversity in the\nGreat Lakes region. SUMMARY:Empire Area Museum Complex Heritage Day
DESCRIPTION:EMPIRE AREA MUSEUM COMPLEX CELEBRATES HERITAGE DAY\nSATURDAY\, OCTOBER  8th 2016 from 1-4PM\n\nThis year will feature a presentation by Elizabeth Mitchell\, soprano and Ted Badgerow\, tenor. Called the Dodworth Duo\, they will bring songs to life\nwith vocals and instruments from the 1835-1895 era. They will be strolling  the grounds entertaining from 1-4 PM all Heritage Day afternoon.\n There will be demonstrations in the  making of  apple cider\, ice cream\, butter\, apple butter\, maple sugar candy\, sauerkraut\,   and other demonstrations using turn of the century methods.\n Other entertainment and activities will include black smithing\, woodworking\, recorded old phonograph and music box music and player piano demonstrations. \n There will also be several old tractors\, cars and bicycles spread throughout the museum grounds providing various demonstrations. Old style hit and miss engines will also be put to work pumping water and grinding corn.\n According to chairperson Dave Taghon\, our 44rd Heritage Days Celebration marks the end of another great season of keeping our past alive.\nThe local Empire Quilters have donated another beautiful quilt to be raffled off during the festivities to benefit the Empire Museum. DESCRIPTION:Rangers and staff at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore will be presenting short films from a number of National Park Service sites December 17th at 12:00pm. This two day film festival will be the final event in our centennial celebration of the National Park Service. \nThe National Park Service will be finishing out the 2016 centennial year with 413 individual park sites. These sites encompass some of the most beautiful and important natural\, cultural and historical resources in the United States. Explore some of these treasured places in a series of National Park Service Films\, each film a reflection of a different national park or national heritage location from around the country. The festival will be held December 17th at the Phillip A. Hart Visitor Center in Empire\, MI\, starting at 12:00 pm and lasting approximately 2 ½ hours. There is no charge for this program and visitors are welcome to watch as many or few films as they like.

SUMMARY:The Glen Arbor Art Association’s Talk About Art series with Kaz McCue this Sunday
DESCRIPTION:In the TALK ABOUT ART ® series\, our host conducts live interviews with local and regional artists about their art making and thinking. These insightful interviews take place monthly\, January-May\, at no charge. Our current host\, Norm Wheeler\, recently retired from teaching Science and English for 32 years at the Leelanau School. He is the Director of the Lanphier Observatory\, hosting public stargazing two nights a week in summer on Sleeping Bear Bay. The co-founder and continuing host of the Beach Bards Bonfire\, a gathering for by heart poetry\, storytelling\, and music on Friday nights in high summer at the Leelanau School Beach. He also helped Crispin Campbell\, Ben Bricker\, and Tom Fordyce build the first stage behind the Lake St. Studio for the first season of the Manitou Music Festival many years ago. Admission is Free. \nKaz McCue has spent the past twenty-five years working in the arts as a visual artist\, educator\, curator\, and arts administrator. He holds a BFA in photography from Parson’s School of Design and an MFA in mixed media from Long Island University/ C.W. Post Campus. Kaz has received numerous grants and awards and has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. As a curator\, he has put together over 200 exhibitions and over 100 lectures and artist presentations. Kaz has taught at numerous universities\, colleges and academies and has served in several arts administration positions. \nAs a professional\, Kaz has dedicated his life to the arts. His enthusiasm and dedication has helped to define his career and his belief in the power of the arts has driven his commitment to participating in the process of the arts and mentoring young artists. Kaz is currently an Instructor of Visual Arts at the Leelanau School in Glen Arbor and he also serves as the Artistic Director at Michigan Legacy Art Park.
