SUMMARY:Mostly Music presents “The Big Bands Never Left…the Audience Went Somewhere Else”
DESCRIPTION:Get behind the scenes with the “Mostly Music” series continuing in January 2017. The “Mostly Music” series is a winter extension of the Manitou Music Festival. “Mostly Music” is hosted by Bob Foskett\, who programmed jazz radio in Chicago for 30 years and is now a DJ for Friday Morning Jazz at WNMC in Traverse City. Programs will be roughly 60% music\, 40% discussion. There are programs in January\, February\, and March and if you enjoy watching and listening to live music\, “Mostly Music” provides an opportunity to get some “behind-the-scenes” information too. Plus it’s another way to escape cabin fever in the throes of winter. \n  \nThe first session of Mostly Music’s winter series is a lecture with recorded examples of the continuing metamorphosis of the jazz big band in American music.  As American tastes in popular music changed in the 1950’s\, the big bands\, which were considered the core of American popular and dance music until then\, seemed to be on their way to extinction. \nHowever\, creative musicians and changes in music education not only revived the big band concept\, but nurtured it to the point that today there are more big bands playing jazz than during the heydays of the 30’s and 40’s….by at least a thousand fold!  GAAA’s resident jazz nut Bob Foskett will trace and explain that development.

SUMMARY:Super Soups Contest for National Homemade Soup Day
DESCRIPTION:What is your favorite soup? Is it bean with ham or perhaps tomato bisque\, cheddar broccoli or chicken noodle? No matter your preference\, you’re invited to celebrate National Homemade Soup Day on Saturday\, February 4\, 2017 at The Homestead’s “Super Soups” contest. \nWhile homemade soup can be traced back to about 20\,000 BC\, the word “soup” likely comes from the French “soupe” or “sope” (meaning broth) which comes from Latin “suppa” (meaning “bread soaked in broth” – much as “sop” from Germanic sources). The word “restaurant” was first used in France in the 16th century\, to refer to a highly-concentrated\, inexpensive soup\, sold by street vendors. In 1765\, a Parisian entrepreneur opened a shop specializing in such soups\, prompting the use of the modern word for eating establishments world-wide. \nThe Super Soups will run from 11am until 3pm\, admission is $10 per person ($5 for seniors and children under 12 years of age) and includes unlimited 4-ounce samples of soup. Guests will also be given a ballot to vote on their favorite soups\, with prizes awarded at the end of the day. \nAll proceeds from the cost of admission will go to Buckets of Rain\, a Leelanau County-based organization founded in 2006 by local musician Chris Skellenger (a live entertainment regular at The Homestead). Buckets of Rain pioneered the use of gravity-fed\, drip irrigation to help impoverished communities feed themselves in Lesotho\, South Africa\, as well as Kenya\, Guatemala\, Honduras and Belize. \nBuckets of Rain has now focused its energies on the urban struggles in inner city Detroit. By repurposing 30 vacant lots into food production sites\, they have provided hundreds of thousands of servings of vegetables\, free of charge\, to its partners and neighbors. Through the construction of urban gardens on abandoned city lots\, Buckets of Rain has helped diminish urban blight\, rekindle hope in struggling neighborhoods\, bring fresh produce to the community and feed the homeless.

SUMMARY:Wine Tour And Winemaker Dinner
DESCRIPTION:You can find Leelanau county wines at New York restaurants and Parisian caves du vin. But can you find the vineyards when you’re visiting the area? Those country roads get confusing\, and we definitely don’t recommend driving them after a glass (or three) of wine. That’s why The Homestead is happy to announce that we’ve teamed up with some of our friends to offer this special winter tour and tasting at four Leelanau County wineries followed by an evening wine dinner paired with Chef John Piombo’s food. Chef Piombo will do a “live” cooking demonstration for the five-course meal as we talk about the various wines\, food and preparation techniques. \nCall 231.334.5000 to register.

SUMMARY:Talk About Art: Sculptor Bill Allen
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Art Association’s (GAAA) “Talk About Art” series continues with host Norm Wheeler in conversation with sculptor Bill Allen on Sunday\, April 9\, 2 p.m. at The Leelanau School in Glen Arbor. There is no charge. \nAllen is known throughout the region for his large-scale\, welded steel sculpture celebrating a wide range of four-legged animals. In the early 2000s Allen began exploring other media and began creating mixed media paintings — sculptural compositions made from drift wood and other treasures he found washed up on local beaches. These works found their way into a 2010 collaborative project he undertook with Traverse City poet Fleda Brown whose poetry he used as the starting point for new works. Allen is a self-taught visual artist who lives in Maple City. \nThe Leelanau School is located at 1 Old Homestead Road in Glen Arbor. For more information\, please call the GAAA at 231/334-6112\, or go to the GAAA website: glenarborart.org.
