DESCRIPTION:Michigan Legacy Art Park to honor the Pure Michigan Team\nThompsonville\, Mich. – Michigan Legacy Art Park will present the 2014 Legacy Award to Travel Michigan’s Vice President George Zimmermann for his leadership in spearheading the launch of the phenomenally successful Pure Michigan campaign. The Legacy Award presentation happens during the Legacy Gala\, the Art Park’s signature fundraising event\, on August 16\, 2014 at Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville\, Michigan. \nThis year\, the Legacy Award recognizes the significant positive impact the Pure Michigan campaign has on our state. The campaign effectively and meaningfully shares with the world the story of Michigan – its arts\, history\, culture and natural beauty. Travel Michigan’s Vice President George Zimmermann will accept the award on behalf of the team who made the Pure Michigan campaign a reality. Mr. Zimmermann has recently announced his plans to retire at the end of April. \n“What better time to celebrate George Zimmermann’s leadership and the work of the talented staff at Travel Michigan\,” said Renee Hintz\, executive director of Michigan Legacy Art Park. “The creative efforts of the advertising team at McCann Erickson\, the Travel Commission\, and the dedicated leaders throughout the Michigan travel industry have not only boosted tourism in our state\, residents have rediscovered their Michigan pride.” \nThe Pure Michigan campaign created in partnership with McCann Erickson advertising agency and launched in 2006\, originally aired in three advertising regions outside Michigan. By 2009 the Pure Michigan campaign aired nationally and received the Top 10 Tourism Campaign on record by Forbes magazine. In 2013 alone\, Pure Michigan attracted 4 million out-of-state visitors who spent $1.2 billion at Michigan businesses. \nGeorge Zimmermann was named “One of the Top 25 Extraordinary Minds in Hospitality Sales and Marketing” by the Hospitality Sales & Marketing Association International (HSMAI) in 2012. In 2011\, he was named State Tourism Director of the Year by his peers\, the National Council of State Tourism Directors. \nThe Legacy Gala begins with a reception and silent auction\, followed by dinner\, keynote address\, presentation of the Legacy Award and a tribute video about the honoree. The annual event is the main fundraiser for Michigan Legacy Art Park – a place that attracts over ten thousand visitors each year to discover more than forty outdoor sculptures and thirty poetry stones along 1.6 miles of hiking trails. The Art Park’s education programs\, summertime concerts and year-round events further inspire awareness\, appreciation and passion for Michigan history\, culture and environment. \n  \nTickets to the 2014 Legacy Gala are $75 per person and can be purchased online at www.michiganlegacyartpark.org/events or by calling 231.378.4963. SUMMARY:New Fiber Work: Brady\, Brown + Kostyshyn
DESCRIPTION:Fiber is the focus Sept. 19-Oct. 13 at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. The gallery will showcase contemporary approaches to an old medium by three artists: Kathy Brady\, Stephen Kostyshyn and Lisa Perrine Brown. The show opens Sept. 19 with a 6 p.m. reception. \n  \nBrady\, a Williamston resident\, creates mixed media vessels in clay. She combines fiber – paper and vegetation – with her clay and hand forms the object. Brady also looks to the quilt world for design inspiration. \n  \nKostyshyn also combines clay and fiber. He throws or creates through slab work a clay base from which he weaves intricate baskets and vases. The Cedar resident uses a variety of materials in his weaving\, including rattan\, palm\, birch bark and red osier. \n  \nBrown began interpreting maps of local waterways and landforms in 2012. After enlarging the maps\, Brown translates them into woven tapestries and sewn constructions that use both new and recycled fiber materials. As part of the exhibition\, the Traverse City artist will talk about her work and conduct a demonstration at Center Gallery Sunday\, Sept. 21\, 1 p.m. \n  \nFor more information\, please call 231/334-3179. \n  \n

Griffin is a professor of English now retired from Kalamazoo College. \n  \nThe GAAA’s Artist-In-Residence program provides artists with two-week residencies. At the end of their stay\, artists present work and talk about their experiences during this period of uninterrupted study. The presentations are open to the public without charge. SUMMARY:Artist-in-Residence Talk: Roy Kropp
DESCRIPTION:Photography – a “serious hobby” for retired marine ecologist Roy Kropp – is the tool he’ll use to explore northern Michigan’s fall colors during his Sept. 28-Oct. 11artist-residency with the Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA). Kropp talks about his two-week work-study Oct. 9\, 7:30 p.m.\, Glen Arbor Art Association\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n  \n“Fall in the Northwest appears very different from that in the East/Midwest\,” said Kropp\, a resident of Sequim\, Washington. The GAAA residency allowed Kropp to develop a photographic portfolio of Midwestern fall colors and patterns; and to explore the cross section between photographic art and scientific exploration. \n  \nThe GAAA’s Artist-In-Residence program provides artists with two-week residencies. At the end of their stay\, artists present work and talk about their experiences during this period of uninterrupted study. The presentations are open to the public without charge.
