SUMMARY:Chili Cook-Off + Perch Fishing Contest
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Lake Chili Cook-off\, an annually anticipated mid-winter event\, is back to its original format this year! Saturday\, February 19th from noon- 3pm\, on the deck of Boonedocks in Glen Arbor. Winners will be crowned as the event wraps up around 3pm. Proceeds from this event are given out on senior scholarship night at Glen Lake School\, to deserving students to help defray college tuition. This is a family friendly event\, just be sure to dress for the weather. \nThis year the Glen Lake Chili Cook-off is not charging a fee to enter your chili. Please send an email to Boonedocksga@gmail.com to enter by February 7th.  Admission to the chili cook-off is $10 per person\, which includes unlimited chili samples. $5 for kids ages 6-12 and seniors 70+\, kids under 6 enter for free. \nSimultaneously with the Chili Cook-Off\, The Sportsman Shop hosts the annual Perch Fishing Contest as either a spectator or participant. Sign up will take place at the Sportsman Shop in Glen Arbor\, MI from 6-7:30am. Ice fishing takes place on the Glen Lakes. Bring your catches back to weigh in\, at the Sportsman Shop at 1pm. Entry fee for the Perch tournament is $20. ($10 goes to chili cook-off and $10 to tournament. 100% pay out.) Call Bob at 231-883-5638 for more info.

DESCRIPTION:Sleeping Bear Inn & Garage Groundbreaking: An open house will take place on Friday\, April 8\, where visitors will be able to see the buildings before they undergo renovation. It will take place at 1pm. BEAR will also host an open house April 9 from 10-2\, though there will be no SLBE rangers or staff available that day. \nThe National Park will be leasing the building to BEAR\, the non-profit “Balancing Environment and Rehabilitation” to preserve the two buildings while providing a wonderful visitor experience in the historic Glen Haven village. Maggie Kato and her husband Jeff retired from their longtime jobs with Habitat for Humanity of Genesee County to move north and oversee the renovation before transitioning into innkeepers. This coming year\, the Inn will undergo the renovations for it to open for the 2023 season\, with plans to feature 8 bed and breakfast rooms and bathrooms. The couple hopes to eventually open the dining room to the public as a restaurant. The Inn plans to be open and operate year-round. \n“Originally built between 1865 and 1867\, the inn served as a frontier hotel for business travelers and local workers. It continued in operation throughout the next century evolving into a tourist hotel before closing in the early 1970s. Now retired from competitive picking\, Antony serves as the “Expert in Residence” for the National Morel Festival. SUMMARY:Poor Farm Barn: a history restored
DESCRIPTION:The Leelanau County Historic Preservation Society will relate the history of the iconic Poor Farm\, located just west of Maple City. The farm was established by Leelanau County in 1908\, as a means of providing housing and meaningful employment to impoverished area residents. After the farm ceased operations\, the property fell into disrepair\, with only the barn remaining in place. LCHPS members Laurel Jeris\, Barbara Siepker and Steve Stier will describe the successful efforts to preserve and rehabilitate this historic structure\, and promote greater understanding of the farm’s history.
