DESCRIPTION:Human hands with their dexterous\, opposable thumbs have allowed us to innovate\, to use tools\, to become nimble\, skillful\, creative\, and artful makers. The Glen Arbor Arts Center By Hand project is a consideration of the myriad ways in which the human hand is intrinsic to creative work; and a demonstration of what human hands can make. The By Hand project runs March 29 – May 30\, 2024\, and offers a range of programs that explore this theme through the visual\, performing\, architectural\, and literary arts. \nIn a time of machine dominance\, there is case to be made that right now is the perfect moment to celebrate making-by-hand. DESCRIPTION:Author and environmentalist Jane Elder will discuss her newly published book. It weaves together memories from her life in the upper Midwest with nearly fifty years of environmental policy work\, presenting a unique insider’s perspective into the quest to protect the Great Lakes. Her book also charts a more sustainable path moving forward\, offering a bold alternative to the “boom and bust” cycle of resource extraction that have led to both environmental and economic challenges. Copies of the book will be available for purchase. Ms. Elder’s talk is presented in partnership with the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes.
