SUMMARY:OUTDOOR GALLERY DEDICATION
DESCRIPTION:A public celebration and dedication of the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s new Outdoor Gallery are July 30\, 5:30 – 8 pm. The GAAC unveiled its new Outdoor Gallery on May 12. The inaugural exhibition features work by Empire painter Mark Mehaffey. Five of Mark’s acrylic paintings were reproduced on 5ft X 5ft aluminum panels and installed on the GAAC’s west and south exterior walls. \nPreceding the 7 pm start of the dedication ceremony\, Mehaffey will create and complete an original painting of the natural area surrounding the GAAC. He will begin painting at 5:30 pm. The framed painting will be available for purchase during the dedication. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the GAAC’s 2021 Outdoor Gallery project. \nThe GAAC’s Outdoor Gallery was two years in the planning. A committee explored the idea of placing on the walls sculptures\, tiles\, murals\, and other media while searching for the most flexible and cost-effective answer. The weatherproof\, aluminum panels on display were created by Image 360 in Traverse City. \nFollowing a months-long\, call-for-entries search\, Mehaffey’s series of contemporary landscape paintings were selected by Glen Arbor juror-artists Hank Feeley and Emory Mead. Mehaffey maintains an active studio practice. He retired from the Lansing Public School system where he taught visual art from 1973 to 2002. He teaches painting both locally and throughout the United States. Mehaffey’s work remains in place until April 2021. The panels will then be available for purchase. Support for the Outdoor Gallery comes through a generous grant from GAAC members Barb and George Cochran. \nThe GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, in Glen Arbor. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org.

SUMMARY:Video Lecture: Creative Resistance – Political Art + Craftivism
DESCRIPTION:Video Lecture: Creative Resistance – Political Art + Craftivism\nViewable on-line September 20 – November 7\, 2020 \nPolitics – past and present – provide ample fodder for creative inspiration.  Sarah Bearup-Neal\, Glen Arbor Arts Center gallery manager\, surveys some of these powerful examples during a slide lecture. Tickets for this on-line program are $10 GAAC members\, $15 nonmembers. Registered viewers will receive by email an access code that will allow them to watch this video presentation anytime from September 20 – November 7\, 2020. Read more and register here: https://glenarborart.org/events/lecture-creative-resistance/. \nFrom Theodore Gericault’s 19th century painting\, the Raft of the Medusa\, to the thousands of pink\, hand-knit caps worn during the historic 2017 Women’s March in Washington\, DC\, the visual arts show themselves to be expressive tools. Craftivism is a creative movement that began to take shape in the early 2000s. It sought to combine visual art with activism\, and turned to the so-called “domestic arts” of embroidery\, knitting and hand stitching to comment on a wide range of current\, topical issues – from feminism to sexism to environmental concerns. \nNOTE: Some material contained in this presentation is sexually suggestive\, and would be considered “adult.” It may not be appropriate for younger viewers. \n“Political Art + Craftivism” is offered in conjunction with the GAAC’s exhibition Power Tools [September 11 – November 5]. In addition to her duties at the GAAC\, Bearup-Neal is a practicing fiber artist. She received a BFA from Michigan State University.

SUMMARY:Virtual Glen Arbor Holiday Marketplace 2020
DESCRIPTION:This year\, the well attended and anticipated Glen Arbor Holiday Marketplace has gone virtual. Like many events this season being cancelled due to covid-19\, the Glen Lake Chamber decided to find a way to hold this shopping event online. “We didn’t want to miss a beat. Whether we pick up the event in person next year or not\, we can continue to use the work we’re putting in now and be able to also host it online for years to come\,” explains Patricia Widmayer\, the event coordinator for the Chamber and owner of Glen Arbor Bed & Breakfast and Cottages. While normally we host 25-30 artists in person at the Town Hall with 1\,700 people attending\, we have about 17 artisans participating to sell their goods online or by phone/email. “With the help of our already strong event following and marketing\, we expect this year to still be a success for all who participate.”  Patricia is working closely with fellow artisan and friend Carol Murray\, who is helping with the planning and execution of this event.  \nThe Glen Lake Chamber will be using a Facebook page to post updates and to connect the participating artisans with interested shoppers. Instead of just one day of in-person shopping\, this year artisans can reach shoppers for over 1 month. The event will be open and live from November 7th – December 18th. Look for updates on Facebook about the event and details on how to shop: https://www.facebook.com/glenarborholidaymarketplace\nConnect & Shop Participating Artisans:\n\nHere’s how to shop the Virtual Marketplace: See the following Artisans and their pages to shop online or contact them directly to purchase (in a couple of cases). In light of the Holiday Market being cancelled\, plus the impossibility to social distance\, we decided it would be fun to make a video to post instead\, while cancelling the in-person event. Marketing director and local resident\, Raquel Jackson shares\, “It’s been necessary to make decisions that impact public events for the concern of keeping everyone safe\, but I hated to see this joy-filled tradition not happen. Video was the obvious answer to alternatively host the event. We were so pleased when we reached out to the Glen Lake Church and they agreed to help us make it possible. I love the simplicity of the event and the way it brings people together of all ages and beliefs. It will be awesome to see this holiday tradition bring a bit of love and light in a new way.” \nThe Glen Lake Chamber purchased new LED lights to re-decorate the trees that will be strung up by the Glen Lake Fire Department. Plus\, members from Glen Lake Church’s worship team will perform carols with the lighting of the tree\, while a local will provide professional video support. The Chamber will pre-record the event\, then post the video on Facebook for all to see Thanksgiving weekend. \n\nGraphics and Marketing for the Glen Lake Chamber by Raquel Jackson\, Rockwell Art & Design

Paper + Scissors + Glue = New Collages\, an exhibition of 12 new works\, is on display in the GAAC Lobby Gallery January 15 – April 22\, 2021. \nRichmond is more widely known for her distinctive\, spare gouache paintings depicting land- and waterscapes. In recent years\, she has expanded her practice to include compositions assembled from acrylic-painted papers – materials she creates in her studio. \n“This series of collages is a selection from more than 60 pieces I created during COVID-19 isolation\,” Richmond said. “How does one stay creative while fighting off anxiety? I found that making images that were immediate in execution helped me not ‘over think’ the process thus creating a calming\, meditative effect.” \nPaper + Scissors + Glue = New Collages may be viewed on-line beginning January 15\, 2021. Go to: GlenArborArt.org and click on Exhibitions/Virtual Exhibitions. \nThe GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. It is open Monday through Saturday 11 am – 2 pm. Admission is free. \nThe Glen Lake Woman’s Club board and committee chairs are working with the local Health Department to plan a safe Art Fair. Closer to the date of the Art Fair\, we will announce updates through the media\, on our Glen Lake Woman’s Club website at glenlakewomansclub.org and also to our Facebook page. \nEach year\, thousands of people shop for that unique piece of art\, either for themselves or for a special gift. All proceeds support the Glen Lake High School student’s scholarship program. Since 1980\, $275\,860 has been awarded to 210 students with both 1st \, 2nd \, and 3rd year scholarships. Thanks to very generous community donations to our scholarship appeal letter last fall after the cancellation of the 2020 Art Fair\, Glen Lake High School graduating seniors in 2021 and previous\nscholarship winners still attending Northwestern Michigan College will receive scholarships for the next school year. \nFor more information about the Glen Lake Woman’s Club\, the Art Fair\, or our scholarship program\, visit glenlakewomansclub.org

SUMMARY:The Why and How of Seed Saving
DESCRIPTION:Humans have saved seeds since the beginning of time. The Grow Benzie Seed Saving Guild has been saving seeds since its formation in 2008. Two citizen seed savers who tend this project are in conversation. This outdoor program is offered as part of the GAAC’s exhibition Food Is Art / Art Is Food\, in the GAAC gallery through August 19. \nFood and flower seeds don’t just grow in the seed catalog\, but are strategically gathered and harvested. Grow Benzie’s heritage project brings together seed enthusiasts who maintain a seed library at Grow Benzie in Benzonia. The guild offers regular events to teach how to plant for seed harvesting\, save seeds\, and provide a venue to share stories and all aspects of the story of the seed. GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal will talk about this ongoing project with Josh Stoltz\, Grow Benzie executive director; and Becky Thatcher\, project seed librarian. \nFor more information about this free program or the Food Is Art/ Art Is Food exhibition\, or call 231/334-6112.
