SUMMARY:Art Reception: Joan Richmond
DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibition @ Center Gallery \nNorthern Michigan Painter Joan Richmond will show her latest works in Center Gallery from July 26 – August 1. Opening Reception Friday\, July 26 from 6-8 pm. \nGallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm / (231) 334-3179\nmore information @ www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com \n  \nJoan says of her work\, “My paintings use gouache or acrylic water-based medium\, primarily landscapes generated first in plein air. Some are completed and further developed in the studio. This show of paintings at Center Gallery will represent an ongoing series that express my interest in how forms compose a landscape image. The theme for this show is: Found Shapes—Uncovering landscapes. These images explore how shapes\, both geometric and organic\, come together to create compositions. They show my interest in how observed forms play with each other to create compositions. What are the visual relationships in how shapes find themselves together? Shapes interlock\, and natural patterns occur. \nThese combinations become abstracted when formalized in a painting. “Local” color sets the palette but the value range\, light to dark\, organizes the space. I work from nature and use direct observation. These images\, primarily landscapes\, are developed in the field. Some are completed in plein air. Others are brought back to the studio to add layers of paint\, re-evaluate values (dark to light) and readjust forms. Some images are worked in the studio from initial outdoor sketches to create larger paintings.”

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Scott Mills "Mapping Home"
DESCRIPTION:Scott Mills moved back to his childhood home of Maple City in 2014 after spending 10 years away. He quickly realized he needed to get reacquainted with his home turf. Mills talks about the tracking and mapping project he created to do just that on July 28\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This program is open to the public at no charge. \nIn order to reorient himself to the land and get reacquainted with the peninsula that called him back home from the Pacific Northwest\, Mills began walking the unmarked trails and remnant roads that thread through the forests and over the dunes nearby. These “old ways” and their histories so captivated him that he began to plot their routes on a map and describe his passages in writing. Repeated walks in all seasons exposed new dimensions to these old ways\, as well as older ways extending back to the Pleistocene. Mills continues to discover\, follow and map these ways\, and he is currently at work on a body of prose and poetry describing his ongoing passages. \n“Mapping Home” is offered in conjunction with the GAAC exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” in the GAAC gallery from June 7 – August 8. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org.

SUMMARY:Art Reception: Justin Kellner
DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibition @ Center Gallery \nNorthern Michigan Painter Justin Kellner will show his latest works in Center Gallery from August 2 – August 8. Opening Reception Friday\, August 2 from 6-8 pm. \nGallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm / (231) 334-3179\nmore information @ www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com \n  \nJustin has said of his work\, “My work is all Acrylic on Canvas\, abstract landscapes\, textural\, realistic imagery of bird species. The paintings are part of an ongoing series and are representative of my current body of work. They give an impression of the natural areas I’ve explored\, while informing the viewer about their environmental fragility. Very sensitive to their environments\, birds are often a good indicator of the health of a particular ecosystem. In my paintings\, I combine aggressive\, abstract brushstrokes and textures with realistically rendered birds to create spaces that give the impression of erosion\, change and isolation. While my work is informed by my research of environmental issues\, my primary focus has become the hunt for the birds and their habitats. Searching out and identifying various species has led me to explore Michigan’s parks and wetlands. Rather than focusing on the loss of habitat\, I’ve explored the unique environments of individual species\, many of which are maintained by conservation efforts. While painting\, I also explore. Drawing on memories\, natural forms and textures from the environment\, I work intuitively\, creating abstract suggestions of the landscape that remind me of the places where I’ve sought out birds and wildlife. \nMy intent is to evoke memories and the sense of a place and time\, while portraying the interrupted cycles existing throughout the natural world. Through my work\, I hope to inspire others to more\ndeeply explore their local environment and to become invested in the health of its complex ecosystems.”

DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibition @ Center Gallery \nNorthern Michigan Painter Jeff Condon will show his latest works in Center Gallery from August 16 – August 29. Opening Reception Friday\, August 16 from 6-8 pm. \nGallery is open daily 11 am – 5pm / (231) 334-3179 For more information\, www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com \n  \nJeff said of his work\, “My love for color\, interiors\, shape and form has inspired my most recent group of paintings and drawings. Finding places to rest\, places to stop and breathe and daydream reflect a need in our lives to slow down to take time to gaze upon beautiful colors. I trained in painting and graphic design at Kendall College of Art & Design. My work has a certain close up and cropped look\, bringing the viewer into a scene to recall a feeling or space the viewer may have experienced\, like the feeling and energy of someone about to enter a room or having just been there.  Working with color\, light\, and brush stroke\, I capture a moment where one is aware of the energy or sense of being in that very moment.”

SUMMARY:Artist in Resident talk: Patricia Schaefer
DESCRIPTION:Painter Patricia Schaefer will discuss a new series of paintings that explore the human body and bodies of water she plans to create as part of her 2019 artist’s residency with the Glen Arbor Arts Center. The presentation is August 30\, noon at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nEach of the GAAC’s artists-in-residence gives a conversational overview of their residency. These presentations offer a chance to hear about the resident’s project\, and the process they experienced during their two-week stay. Schaefer’s GAAC residency was a chance to explore the overlay of the human body in the landscape – as well as ask questions about how human bodies and bodies of water intersect\, and explore the political\, environmental land existential questions that study prompts. San Francisco\, California\, is Schaefer’s home base. \nThe GAAC artist-in-residence presentation are free and open to the public. For more information go to\nGlenArborArt.org

SUMMARY:Art Reception: Mary O'Neill
DESCRIPTION:Northern Michigan artist Mary O’Neill will show her latest works in Center Gallery from August 30 – September 12. Opening Reception Friday\, August 30 from 6-8 pm. \nGallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm / (231) 334-3179\nmore information @ www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com \n  \nMary has said of her work\, “My work is created from single-use\, post-consumer plastic bags and packaging. You know\, the stuff your groceries\, carrots and diapers come in. For this show\, I’m working thematically with the ideas of chaos and calm. It’s reflective of what’s currently happening in the world. We are confronted with chaos in our leadership everyday and search for calm as an antidote. I’m using the simple shapes of lines and circles to reflect these ideas and how they can reflect both chaos and calm. I’m working with these themes in series of flower imagery\, color-scapes\, waterscapes and landscapes. It is imagery created using non-traditional materials\, which would have ordinarily ended up in a landfill or possibly recycled. It emerged as my own personal response to the disgusting amount of plastic that streams through our lives on a daily basis\, and how our mindless consumption of it needs more awareness. My process often starts with a goal in mind\, but because the material is relatively unpredictable\, I usually end up allowing the material dictate as we go. There is a whole of less frustration that way and process is funner. What may have started out as a landscape\, could very well end up at stems for flowers. The process is very fluid and I’m not necessarily always leading the way.”

SUMMARY:FIBER WITHOUT BORDERS - A JURIED EXHIBITION OPENING RECEPTION
DESCRIPTION:Glen Arbor Arts Center [GAAC] September 13 – November 7\, 2019. Come celebrate Fiber Without Borders\, a juried exhibition of 2D and 3D work exploring fiber materials in fresh\, original ways. A reception to launch the exhibition is Friday\, September 13\, 6-8 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake Street\, Glen Arbor. \nA revolution in the use of fiber materials – from wool\, to paper\, to plastic\, to fruit skins — as the basis for art making began in the 1960s and has continued unabated to the present time. Fiber Without Borders exhibits contemporary work that: \n Acknowledges fiber’s functional roots and contexts\, but does not stop there. \n Examines contemporary social issues. \n Finds innovative uses of fiber materials. \n Moves beyond the expected applications and/or re-examines the conventional ways in which we understand fiber to discover new contexts. \nFiber Without Borders continues through November 7. SUMMARY:Yarn Bomb Installation Day
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 15 | 9:30 am \nYarn bombs are set to drop on the Glen Arbor Arts Center on Sunday\, September 15\, 9:30 am. Volunteers are needed to help install hand-knit “bombs” on trees in the GAAC’s backyard grove as part of the upcoming exhibition “Fiber Without Borders\,” a juried exhibition of contemporary fiber art. Yarn bombing is friendly community event\, and a form of temporary street art. Yarn in any form (knit\, crochet\, latch hook\, cross stitch\, amigurumi or simple wrapping) adorns an object [e.g. tree trunk or limbs\, poles\, waste can] in the public environment. While other forms of graffiti may be decorative\, socio-political commentary\, or vandalism\, yarn bombing was initially almost exclusively about reclaiming and personalizing sterile or cold public places. The start of this movement has been attributed to Houston resident Magda Sayeg\, who says she first got the idea in 2005 when she covered the door handle of her boutique with a custom-made cozy. \nVolunteers of any age are invited to help with the yarn bomb installation. To volunteer\, call the GAAC\, 231/334-6112. “Fiber Without Borders” runs September 13 – November 7. For more information go to\nGlenArborArt.org. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. SUMMARY:Documentary Screening: YARN
DESCRIPTION:Knitting and crocheting\, long dismissed as home hobby and granny-craft\, are at the forefront of the current revolution in fiber arts. As part of its “Fiber Without Borders” exhibition\, the Glen Arbor Arts Center will host a screening of the 2016 documentary Yarn\, and audience talk-back discussion on September 19\, 7 pm at the Empire Township Hall\, 10088 W. Front St.\, Empire. Yarn is presented in collaboration with the Glen Lake Community Library. \nThe traditional crafts of crochet and knitting have become one of the hottest movements in modern art. Yarn looks at the new ways an old craft is transformed in the hands of several international practitioners. The film’s journey begins in Iceland and moves around the globe to sample the sometimes quirky\, always thought-provoking approaches to these needle arts. \nYarn is offered without charge. “Fiber Without Borders\,” a juried exhibition\, runs September 13 – November 7 at the GAAC\, 6031 S. SUMMARY:Talk About Art: The Craft of Artisan Clothing
DESCRIPTION:Sunday\, September 29 | 2 pm \nBefore big box retailers and the omnipresence of factory-manufactured clothing\, people made clothes by hand. Two local artisans have taken up the mantle of slow fashion\, and are creating garments and hats one piece at a time. They’ll talk about their studio work and show their wares at the September 29 Talk About Art interview\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nKeira Duvernoy\, a newly retired physician\, has practiced millinery for the last decade under the moniker Mon Chapeau. She has studied traditional millinery techniques with hatters from California to Ireland. In addition to a line of more fashion-forward toppers\, Duvernoy creates upcycled cold weather hats – a natural outgrowth of her full-time residency in Benzie County. She exhibits her work throughout Michigan and in the Berkshires. \nMeg Staley is a colorist\, printmaker\, textile artist\, and clothing designer living in Maple City. After a mini-career as a Nordstrom buyer\, she moved to New York City and started a company representing small\, bohemian fashion designers\, Soho Showroom. Soon after\, she started making one-of-a-kind clothing with her husband\, Jerry Gretzinger. Their collaboration\, Staley/Gretzinger\, spanned 25 years\, was featured in Vogue\, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle magazines\, and sold to Bloomingdales\, Bergdorf Goodman and many other stores and galleries across the country. Staley’s current practice focuses on garments that employ dying\, printing\, applique\, and patchwork techniques. \nThis studio-clothing edition of Talk About Art is offered without charge\, and in conjunction with “Fiber Without Borders\,” a juried exhibition\, that runs September 13 – November 7 at the GAAC. SUMMARY:Fiber: Visual Art Survey Program
DESCRIPTION:The Glen Arbor Arts Center takes a short look back\, and a long look forward\, at contemporary fiber and textile arts on Sunday\, October 6\, 2 pm. This visual survey is part of the GAAC’s exhibition Fiber Without Borders\, and is presented without charge. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager and studio fiber artist\, will facilitate the program. \nIn the late 1960s the Museum of Modern Art broke new ground with Wall Hangings\, the first major museum exhibition focused on the work of 28 artist working in fiber and textile materials. In the subsequent decades\, the fiber arts have taken a great leap forward to become one of the most expressive\, versatile media in the contemporary art world. No longer viewed in purely functional and domestic terms\, the fiber arts have continued to push definitions\, materials and techniques in the last 60 years. \nThe medium easily crosses old boundaries – moving from the home front to comment and reflect on social changes\, politics\, feminist issues\, as well as the dividing line between art and craft. Fiber Without Borders continues through November 7. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. For more information\, go to GlenArborArt.org
