SUMMARY:Talk About Art: From the Place of the Gathering Light book
DESCRIPTION:Traverse City author Kathleen Stocking’s new book\, From the Place of the Gathering Light — her second book of Leelanau County essays – is the topic of conversation at the next Talk About Art interview June 9\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nGathering Light is a collection of 20 essays written in the last decade\, and in Stocking’s signature\, conversational voice. She focuses on unexpected people and understated places that define Leelanau County. Stocking moved to Glen Arbor in 1952\, at the age of 7 with her family\, and claimed Leelanau County as her home base until 2017. \nStocking’s first book of essays\, Letters from the Leelanau\, was published in 1990\, and became an instant best seller. Like Letters\, Gathering Light showcases Stocking’s interest in off-the-beaten-path people and places that illuminate Leelanau’s history\, and its physical and spiritual character. Other published books include Lake Country\, and The Long Arc of the Universe – Travels Beyond the Pale. The Talk About Art program is free\, and offered in conjunction with the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Home/Place.” For more information go to GlenArborArt.org\, or call 231/334-6112

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Bella and Zack Pryor "A Sign of the Times"
DESCRIPTION:An historic wind storm ripped through Leelanau County in early August 2015\, leveling acres of woodland\, forest\, and residential structures. The broken remains of sheds\, docks and other wood structures provided the raw materials for two young entrepreneurs to turn destruction into construction. Siblings Bella and Zack Pryor talk about the small business they created on July 21\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This program is open to public at no charge. \nBella Pryor\, 18 and a University of Michigan freshman\, and her brother Zach\, 15 established Michagain Signery in 2015. The duo salvaged storm-damaged wood and began creating iconic\, decorative signs. They built a small business\, the profits of which were directed back to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Their new enterprise also gave them a constructive\, creative\, life-affirming way to work through their feelings of sadness about the storm and its\nimpact on their Glen Arbor home. \n“A Sign of the Times” is offered in conjunction with the GAAC exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” a deep look into home and place identity. It runs June 7 – August 8 in the GAAC gallery. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org

SUMMARY:Talk: Home/Place\, Affordable Housing
DESCRIPTION:How does a shortage of housing in Northwest Michigan take its toll on residents and businesses? That question is the focus of an hour-long panel discussion June 11\, 10:30 am at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This program is open to the public without charge. \nThe panel is composed of three housing advocates:\n   •Sarah Lucas\, executive director of the newly-created Housing North\, a Traverse City non-profit that supports stakeholders working to create housing in a 10-county area. \n   •Frank Clements\, volunteer member of the Leelanau County Housing Action Committee. \n   •Chris Frey\, volunteer development manager of Leelanau Reach. Creating homes for young families\, workers and other low- to middle-income residents is a multilayered challenge. Communities must grapple with new zoning ordinances as well as work through negative perceptions that accompany terms such as “affordable housing.” The GAAC panel will also explore how affordable housing contributes to the character and diversity of a community. \nThis project is offered in conjunction with the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” an exploration of home and place identity. The exhibition is in the GAAC gallery from June 7 – August 8. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org

SUMMARY:Art Reception: Holly Sturges
DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibition @ Center Gallery \nNorthern Michigan Painter Holly Sturges will show her latest works in Center Gallery from June 28 – July 4 with Opening Reception Friday\, June 28 from 6-8 pm. \nGallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm Call (231) 334-3179 or for more information @ www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com \n  \nHolly said of her work\, “My paintings focus on the breath taking beauty of the Sleeping Bear area. I have been visiting Glen Arbor regularly since 1990 and paint plein air when I am here. The days and weeks of sitting in the dunes or the fields observing nature and historic farms have imprinted these views on my brain. Oil paint is my medium and I paint on panels when I paint outside in the warmer months. During the cold times in Michigan I paint in my studio on larger canvases and reiterate what I have seen and felt in the dunes and fields. \nI have been painting in the Sleeping Bear Dunes since the early 1990s\, taking classes through the Glen Art Art Center and becoming an Artist in Residence in 2009. The work in this show represents my most recent interpretations of the beauty I find here. Recently I have been fascinated by the intimate corners of barns connecting and the shadows found there.”

SUMMARY:Art Reception: Margo Burian
DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibition @ Center Gallery \nNorthern Michigan Painter Margo Burian will show her latest works in Center Gallery from July 5 – July 11. Opening Reception Friday\, July 5 from 6-8 pm. \nGallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm / (231) 334-3179\nmore information @ www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com \n  \nMargo said of her work\, “Summer 2019 will be my 12th consecutive year showing with Center Gallery!!! I will be showing a group of mixed media paintings and collages on paper. The work this year will focus on abstracted landscape from remembered experience. The work is part of an ongoing exploration of paintings which focus primarily on observation and memory. The work begins with direct contact with the subject by drawing\, making thumbnail sketches for composition and color reference\, photography. Once I’ve established visual interest\, I take my reference material into the studio where it serves as inspiration for making paintings. Often I will make a number of paintings using the reference material and each successive painting becomes reference for the next\, until the final work in the “thread” becomes unrecognizable from the initial source.”

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Historic Cottages of Glen Lake
DESCRIPTION:More than 20 years ago Barbara Siepker\, a Glen Arbor book publisher with a keen interest in local history\, began a project to memorialize the heyday of summer resort and cottage life in the Glen Lake area. The result is the book Historic Cottages of Glen Lake. Siepker is joined by Traverse City architectural photographer Dietrich Floeter\, her collaborator\, to discuss the project on July 7\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This program is open to the public without charge. \nHistoric Cottages of Glen Lake\, first published in 2008\, is visually stunning coffee table book with images of 50 summer cottages. Siepker’s desire to commemorate these iconic dwellings was prompted by concern – as more cottages were torn down and replaced by modern lakefront structures\, Siepker feared the loss of important local history. Siepker and Floeter worked together to capture these old cottages’ visual memory\, and their contribution to the character of the locality. \nThis program is offered in conjunction with the GAAC exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” an exploration of home and place identity. It can be viewed in the GAAC gallery from June 7 – August 8. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org

SUMMARY:Art Reception: Joseph Lombardo
DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibition @ Center Gallery \nNorthern Michigan Painter Joseph Lombardo will show his latest works in Center Gallery from July 12 – July 18. Opening Reception Friday\, July 12 from 6-8 pm. \nGallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm / (231) 334-3179\nmore information @ www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com \n  \nJoseph said of his work:\n“I will be exhibiting landscape and interior paintings. The oil paintings are done in studio and some in plein air. The paintings are all local landscape subjects. \nThis work is part of an ongoing series of paintings from up-north. I will continue some of my up-north motifs including paintings of Art’s\, beaches\, barns\, and Glen Arbor. There are a few themes that I am focused on. Primarily local landscapes. I am also experimenting with vignette themes\, a vignette is not really a theme but sort of fits here. I want my process to be quick and spontaneous but there is planning and thoughtfulness too. Paint/act quickly. Reflect/look carefully. Repeat. The process is left visible in the final product. Steps: 1. Stain canvas with color 2. Wipe away light areas with rag 3. Draw 4. Block-in large shapes and values 5. Finishing touches.”

DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibition @ Center Gallery \nNorthern Michigan Painter Joan Richmond will show her latest works in Center Gallery from July 26 – August 1. Opening Reception Friday\, July 26 from 6-8 pm. \nGallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm / (231) 334-3179\nmore information @ www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com \n  \nJoan says of her work\, “My paintings use gouache or acrylic water-based medium\, primarily landscapes generated first in plein air. Some are completed and further developed in the studio. This show of paintings at Center Gallery will represent an ongoing series that express my interest in how forms compose a landscape image. The theme for this show is: Found Shapes—Uncovering landscapes. These images explore how shapes\, both geometric and organic\, come together to create compositions. They show my interest in how observed forms play with each other to create compositions. What are the visual relationships in how shapes find themselves together? Shapes interlock\, and natural patterns occur. \nThese combinations become abstracted when formalized in a painting. “Local” color sets the palette but the value range\, light to dark\, organizes the space. I work from nature and use direct observation. These images\, primarily landscapes\, are developed in the field. Some are completed in plein air. Others are brought back to the studio to add layers of paint\, re-evaluate values (dark to light) and readjust forms. Some images are worked in the studio from initial outdoor sketches to create larger paintings.”

SUMMARY:Gallery Talk: Scott Mills "Mapping Home"
DESCRIPTION:Scott Mills moved back to his childhood home of Maple City in 2014 after spending 10 years away. He quickly realized he needed to get reacquainted with his home turf. Mills talks about the tracking and mapping project he created to do just that on July 28\, 2 pm at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This program is open to the public at no charge. \nIn order to reorient himself to the land and get reacquainted with the peninsula that called him back home from the Pacific Northwest\, Mills began walking the unmarked trails and remnant roads that thread through the forests and over the dunes nearby. These “old ways” and their histories so captivated him that he began to plot their routes on a map and describe his passages in writing. Repeated walks in all seasons exposed new dimensions to these old ways\, as well as older ways extending back to the Pleistocene. Mills continues to discover\, follow and map these ways\, and he is currently at work on a body of prose and poetry describing his ongoing passages. \n“Mapping Home” is offered in conjunction with the GAAC exhibition “New Views: Home/Place\,” in the GAAC gallery from June 7 – August 8. For more information go to GlenArborArt.org.

SUMMARY:Art Reception: Justin Kellner
DESCRIPTION:Art Exhibition @ Center Gallery \nNorthern Michigan Painter Justin Kellner will show his latest works in Center Gallery from August 2 – August 8. Opening Reception Friday\, August 2 from 6-8 pm. \nGallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm / (231) 334-3179\nmore information @ www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com \n  \nJustin has said of his work\, “My work is all Acrylic on Canvas\, abstract landscapes\, textural\, realistic imagery of bird species. The paintings are part of an ongoing series and are representative of my current body of work. They give an impression of the natural areas I’ve explored\, while informing the viewer about their environmental fragility. Very sensitive to their environments\, birds are often a good indicator of the health of a particular ecosystem. In my paintings\, I combine aggressive\, abstract brushstrokes and textures with realistically rendered birds to create spaces that give the impression of erosion\, change and isolation. While my work is informed by my research of environmental issues\, my primary focus has become the hunt for the birds and their habitats. Searching out and identifying various species has led me to explore Michigan’s parks and wetlands. Rather than focusing on the loss of habitat\, I’ve explored the unique environments of individual species\, many of which are maintained by conservation efforts. While painting\, I also explore. Drawing on memories\, natural forms and textures from the environment\, I work intuitively\, creating abstract suggestions of the landscape that remind me of the places where I’ve sought out birds and wildlife. \nMy intent is to evoke memories and the sense of a place and time\, while portraying the interrupted cycles existing throughout the natural world.
