SUMMARY:Michael Lowery | Artist Reception & Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Grand Ledge artist Michael Lowery returns to Leelanau County with a new body of watercolor paintings on July 27 at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St. in Glen Arbor. An artist’s reception is scheduled from 6pm – sundown on Friday\, July 27. The exhibition continues through August 2. \nLowery approaches the genre of landscape painting from an architectural\, narrative perspective. He has built a body of evocative work that celebrates old homesteads — the porches\, the\nlaundry line of clothes drying in the sun\, the crows perched on the roof top. All the signs of farm life are there\, even if the artist chooses to suggest their presence through other\, subtle symbols. \nCenter Gallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm. SUMMARY:The Art of Water with Hank Feeley
DESCRIPTION:Artists have been inspired by H2O since its first surprising visualization in the prehistoric African Sahara. Artist Hank Feeley springboards off of this history and into “The Art of Water in 28 ½ Minutes\,” July 19\, 11 am in the Glen Arbor Arts Center gallery\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. Cost of the presentation is $10 GAAC members and $15 non-members. \nIn a lively and fast-pace presentation\, Feeley explores how artists have invoked the water muse as symbolic of such human concerns as life\, immortality\, purification/cleansing\, passage/transport\, revitalization/refreshment\, destruction and\, of course\, beauty. This wide- ranging presentation will cover prehistoric visualizations of water\, painting from Leonardo to today’s David Hockney\, sculpture from Bernini to Jaume Plensa\, installation art\, water as a physical material\, architecture\, water inspired music and dance\, digital art\, poetry\, performance art\, and video and film.  \nFeeley is an author\, painter\, and sculptor whose second book Painting the Joy of Sleeping Bear County was published in 2016. He is a graduate of The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Harvard Business School. “The Art of Water in 28 ½ Minutes” is offered as part of the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Water = Life = Art\,” which continues through August 4. SUMMARY:Margo Burian artist reception & exhibition
DESCRIPTION:For her 11th consecutive solo show at Center Gallery in Glen Arbor\, Maple City painter Margo Burian breaks with her tradition of landscape painting\, and for the first time shows a group of mixed media abstracted paintings on panel. This exhibition of new works opens Friday\, July 6 with a 6 p.m. reception. \nBurian has traditionally worked in oil paint. In these new works\, she explores water- based media including acrylic paint\, graphite\, collage\, and image transfer. “The paintings are deeply layered and consist of multiple sessions in the studio\,” she said. “They’re derived from a combination of observation\, memory\, sketch\, and photo reference. Often times the original image becomes lost in the layering process until it becomes a separate image onto itself.” \nCenter Gallery’s show of work by Margo Burian continues through July 12. \nCenter Gallery is open daily 11 am – 5 pm. SUMMARY:Center Gallery | Exhibition and Sundown Reception
DESCRIPTION:Painter Robert Ross likes “to paint ordinary\, often overlooked scenes and subjects.” Ross takes viewers on a tour of these places and things in an exhibition of new work at\nCenter Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nThe show opens Friday\, June 29 with a 6pm – sundown reception\, and continues through Thursday\, July 5. \nBorn and raised in Michigan\, Ross now lives in Florida and makes annual visits to northern Michigan to renew his relationship with the local landscape. “My theme is the ongoing visual conversation between the abandoned farm buildings and surrounding fields\, hills\, trees and sky in the Port Oneida district of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\,” he said. “The classic shapes of these sentinels from the past are altered subtly by changing light and weather\, giving them a sense of mystery and movement.” Ross works in oil paint\, and combines plein air studies with studio work. \nFor more information and Spring gallery hours go to www.lakestreetstudiosglenarbor.com\, or call 231-334-3179

SUMMARY:Talk about Art: The Lake Michigan Mermaid
DESCRIPTION:Two Michigan poets have cast Lake Michigan as the setting for a new telling of an ancient struggle in the The Lake Michigan Mermaid. Poets Linda Nemec Foster of Grand Rapids\, and Anne-Marie Oomen of Empire created an epic poem in book form about coming of age in a troubled world. They read from their 2018 work and talk about the process of collaboratively crafting this tale on Friday\, June 15 at the Glen Arbor Arts Center\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. This author reading and interview begins at 7 pm. \nAccompanied by Meridith Ridl’s illustrations\, The Lake Michigan Mermaid explores family relationships and generational bonds. The book was crafted over a decade of back-and- forth emails between Foster and Oomen\, of their drafts poems and ideas. GAAC Gallery Manager Sarah Bearup-Neal will talk with the poets about this process. The Lake Michigan Mermaid reading is offered at no charge as part of the GAAC’s exhibition “New Views: Water = Life = Art\,” which continues through August 4 in the GAAC gallery. SUMMARY:GAAC Artist Reception\, New Views: Water
DESCRIPTION:Water surrounds us in Northern Michigan. And the Glen Arbor Arts Center looks to the Big Lake\, the streams\, wetlands and ponds for a “New View: Water = Life = Art\,” an exhibition\nrunning June 1 – August 4 in the GAAC gallery\, 6031 S. SUMMARY:Center Gallery Artist Reception: Barbara Cochran and Margie Guyot
DESCRIPTION:Center Gallery hosts an artists’ reception to open its first exhibition of the 2018 season on Friday\, May 25\, 6-8 p.m. at the gallery: 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. A celebration of the region’s rural life — as seen by painters Barbara Cochran and Margie Guyot — launches Center Gallery’s 2018 season. \nCochran lives on a Leelanau County cider apple farm. Her oil paintings reflect the view outside her studio window\, and celebrate the pastoral beauty of her home county. Although the region is best known for its beaches and lakes\, Cochran chooses to zero in on farmstead life — from its fruits and vegetables to its farmyard creatures. \nGuyot is well known for her atmospheric depictions of farms and fields found along the iconic backroads in Antrim Country\, her home base. She also works in oil\, and paints en plein air\, a technique that challenges the painter to record scenes quickly and on the spot. Center Gallery’s opening exhibition continues through June 28.
