SUMMARY:Outdoor Gallery Panel Auction
DESCRIPTION:All five panels from the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s 2022 Outdoor Gallery exhibition will be available for acquisition. The GAAC is holding an online auction April 25 – 27. The 5-foot square artworks are reproductions of original\, acrylic paintings by Carrie Hensel\, the Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, winner of the 2022 Outdoor Gallery competition. \nOnline bidding begins April 25\, 9 am\, and concludes on April 27\, 2 pm. Opening bids start at $600/panel minimum on these four panels: Revisit The Pines\, Birches In October\, Wintry Woods\, and Twilight On Bear Lake. Note: The opening bid for the Morning Sun On Trilliums panel begins at $500. In Summer 2022 there was an unsuccessful attempt to steal this panel\, which resulted in some surface damage: several linear scratches\, and two “dents” along the top edge of the panel. Bidding instructions and images of the panels may be found here: https://glenarborart.org/2023-outdoor-gallery-panel-auction/. \nThe panels are lightweight aluminum finished with a weather-resistant coating. They now hang on the GAAC’s exterior walls\, and may be viewed at any time. Read more about Carrie Hensel and see images of the 2023-23 panels here: https://glenarborart.org/events/outdoor-gallery-exhibit-carrie-hensel/. Proceeds from the auction benefit the GAAC’s Outdoor Gallery project.

SUMMARY:Creativity Q+A LIVE with Blacksmith Scott Lankton
DESCRIPTION:How do artists think\, work\, and practice? Those questions are explored during Creativity Q+A LIVE\, a series of conversations with Northern Michigan artists at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. On May 14\, 1 pm Leelanau County artist Scott Lankton talks about his practice with Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager. The program is free. No reservations are required. Doors open at noon. \nBlacksmith Scott Lankton was “hooked on hot steel” the first time he worked with it. He went on to find a vocation in the forge\, pounding metal into domestic objects of great beauty. Lankton also found that this old art + craft form can be put to use in the pursuit of peace\, and be a way of raising awareness about gun violence — as he raises the profile of his calling – blacksmithing — and how it is more than an historical craft form demonstrated in museum settings. \nCreativity Q+A LIVE is an offshoot of the GAAC’s online feature\, Creativity Q+A. Since 2020\, the GAAC has published monthly\, long-form interviews that dig into artists’ creative practices. Lankton’s conversation was published in October 2022. To read it\, and all the Creativity Q+A interviews\, go to GlenArborArt.org / ARTISTS. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:51st Annual Glen Lake Woman's Club Art Fair
DESCRIPTION:2023 marks the 51st annual Glen Lake Woman’s Club Art Fair\, a juried Art Fair with over 90 artists carefully selected to represent a wide variety of one-of-a-kind art pieces for sale at the Glen Arbor Township Hall. The Art Fair features artisans in many mediums including pottery\, painting\, textiles\, woodworking\, and jewelry. Each year\, thousands of people shop for that unique piece of art\, either for themselves or for a special gift. The event takes place at the Glen Arbor Township Hall from 10am to 4pm. \nMeg DeJager\, Art Fair co-chair states\, “I am involved in the Glen Lake Woman’s Club Art Fair because of the high quality art provided by the juried vendors during such a fun day for the entire community. With free admission\, the vendors offer a wide variety of styles and price points for every shopper.” \nRuthy Bolton\, co-chair of the Art Fair\, volunteers for this special event because the Art Fair provides scholarships for Glen Lake High School students as they continue their education at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. DeJager also noted that vendor booth rentals\, popcorn and bake sales\, lunch\, Club jewelry booth\, and auction items all provide funds for the student scholarship fund. \nThe Art Fair is a popular event in the community\, often making this the busiest day of the year in Glen Arbor. Many shoppers return to visit the booths of their favorite artists or to explore the artwork of new vendors. Dozens of Glen Lake Woman’s Club members\, supported by family friends and members of the Empire Lions Club all volunteer to make sure the day runs smoothly for both vendors and community members. \nSince 1980\, the Glen Lake Woman’s Club has awarded $307\,110 to 240 students with both 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd year scholarships to Northwestern Michigan College. The scholarships are announced at the Glen Lake High School Honors Night in May.

SUMMARY:Artist In Residence Presentation - Ian Kennelly
DESCRIPTION:Massachusetts artist Ian Kennelly will use his Glen Arbor Arts Center residency to “further my observations” of the ephemeral space that exists where water\, land and sky meet. This is familiar territory for the painter. In the last two years\, Kennelly has created works that explore the human relationship to the boundaries created by water. Kennelly will talk about his project during a public presentation August 25\, noon\, at the GAAC\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. The presentation is free. \nSince the 1990s\, the GAAC has welcomed visiting artists who want to immerse themselves in their work. The GAAC’s Artist-in-Residence program offers up to seven\, creative practitioners a two-week respite from their daily lives in order to focus on a new idea that needs space\, or to develop an on-going project. SUMMARY:Creativity Q+A LIVE with Fiber Artist Meg Staley
DESCRIPTION:How do artists think\, work\, and practice? Those questions are explored during Creativity Q+A LIVE\, a series of conversations with Northern Michigan artists at the Glen Arbor Arts Center. On September 30\, 1 pm Leelanau County artist Meg Staley talks about her practice with Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager. The program is free. No reservations are required. Doors open at noon. \nMeg Staley hand builds women’s clothing. Each piece is a composition that allows her to bring to it the myriad surface design techniques that make up her distinctive visual vocabulary. This is not\, however\, a story about fashion\, but a life-long journey that uses clothing as an expressive tool. \nCreativity Q+A LIVE is an offshoot of the GAAC’s online feature\, Creativity Q+A. Since 2020\, the GAAC has published monthly\, long-form interviews that dig into artists’ creative practices. Staley’s conversation was published in June 2022. To read it\, and all the Creativity Q+A interviews\, go to GlenArborArt.org / ARTISTS. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.

SUMMARY:By Hand Project
DESCRIPTION:Human hands with their dexterous\, opposable thumbs have allowed us to innovate\, to use tools\, to become nimble\, skillful\, creative\, and artful makers. DESCRIPTION:Coffee With The Authors is a live\, conversational interview with local and regional authors about the craft and process of writing. The 2024 series kicks off April 6\, 1 am at the Glen Arbor Arts Center with Heather Spooner\, owner of Ampersand Lettering Lab\, an art and hand lettering business in Traverse City. Spooner will talk about The Letter League\, an adult pen pal project she created to encourage writing letters by hand during the COVID pandemic. Sarah Bearup-Neal\, GAAC gallery manager\, leads the conversation. \nThe Letter League is the story of finding human connection during the pandemic. When Spooner launched the idea in April 2020\, the response was immediate\, and enthusiastic. In that time\, Spooner has connected more than 550 letter writers from around the world with one another. The Letter League also caught the attention of Los Angeles filmmaker Michelle Boyaner of Greenie Films\, and a documentary about “stories of connection in a disconnected time” was created. During Coffee With The Authors Spooner will talk about hand-written letters sent by the post office\, and the documentary’s April 27\, Traverse City premiere at the Dennos Museum Center. \nThis Coffee With The Authors interview is part of the GAAC’s By Hand project\, an exploration of making and creating by hand in a time of machine dominance. The project runs March 29 – May 30. Read more about By Hand at GlenArborArt.org /EXHIBITS. Coffee With The Authors is supported by the Cottage Book Shop and the Glen Lake Community Library. It is offered without charge. The GAAC is located at 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor.
