SUMMARY:Leelanau Press Book Signing
DESCRIPTION:Leelanau Press Book Signing\nSunday July 10 at 1:00 p.m.\nWe are pleased to welcome the authors of the new books from Leelanau Press this summer.\nBarbara Siepker will be on hand to sign her new book\, Historic Cottages of Glen Lake: Revised Second Edition ($55.00) with photographs by Dietrich Floeter. This book offers a  rare glimpse into the interiors of 60 historic Glen Lake summer cottages and the nostalgia enveloping them. The stories of the families that built on Glen Lake are recounted: where they came from\, how they got here\, where they stayed. They fell in love with the Glen Lake and the Dunes and sent down deep roots by building these now-historical family retreats. Three hundred and fifty photographs honor cottage lore and memories and take us on a walk back in time. Each cottage’s importance in the lives of its owners and to the community is celebrated\, revealing the special sense of place and state of mind that only a lake cottage can evoke.\nAlso on hand to sign their new books:\nRevered photographer Ken Scott and painter Kaye Krapohl trekked the entire 100 mile Lake Michigan Leelanau Peninsula shoreline. The first to accomplish and document this amazing feat\, their two unique visions and spectacular artwork are now available in the new book Leelanau Trek: One Shoreline\, Two Visions (45.00)\nAND more favorite local haunts are captured by artist Hank Feeley in his second book Painting the Joy of Sleeping Bear Country. ($25.00). His fun\, often insightful and whimsical paintings\, make us smile. These last two books will be available in late June.

SUMMARY:Talk About Art: Kathleen Stocking's 'Long Arc'
DESCRIPTION:Award-winning essayist Kathleen Stocking discusses her new memoir\, The Long Arc of the Universe – Travels Beyond the Pale\, July 28\, 7 p.m. at the Glen Arbor Art Association\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. The summer edition of the GAAA’s “Talk About Art” series brings the Leelanau County writer back to her home turf to discuss the world travels that became this new work of creative nonfiction. “Talk About Art”®\, now in its eighth year\, is a series of free conversational interviews with area artists. No reservations are required. \nThe Long Arc of the Universe\, published in 2016\, is the newest installment in a trilogy of collected essays. The first book\, Letters from the Leelanau in 1991\, stays close to home on the Leelanau Peninsula. Lake Country in 1994 explores the author’s experiences from Ann Arbor to the Upper Peninsula in Michigan. Like the two previous books\, this one begins in\, and always returns to\, Lake Leelanau. However\, in The Long Arc of the Universe\, Stocking takes us all over the world: to California\, where she taught writing in the state prison system; to El Salvador\, where she taught the children of the ruling oligarchs; to Thailand and Romania\, where she was a teacher mentor with the Peace Corps; and to London\, to research her family’s English roots. \nStocking grew up above Sleeping Bear Bay in Glen Arbor\, the daughter of lumberman Pierce Stocking\, a veteran of the Civilian Conservation Corps\, whose name graces the scenic drive in the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, and Eleanor Stocking\, the head of the English Department at the Traverse City High School through the 1960s and 1970s. Stocking holds a B.A. in English from the University of Michigan and an M.F.A. from Warren Wilson College in North Carolina. She has received numerous awards over the years for her writing. Stocking’s essays have been paired with work by E. B. White and Annie Dillard in four major college textbooks and praised for her easy-going style and pithy observations.

SUMMARY:Leelanau Love Affair: New Paintings by Neil Walling
DESCRIPTION:Suttons Bay artist Neil Walling continues his love affair with Leelanau County in a new group of watercolor and oil paintings starting July 29 at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \n  \nWalling’s life-long affection for the region has moved him to study many of the familiar Leelanau County scenes in search of something fresh to depict. “There are a great many scenes in the county\, but I always look for something unexpected or overlooked by the casual observer\,” he said. “Fish Town is a good example. It has been painted by many fine artists\, so my goal is to see it from a new perspective.” Walling works paints in one sitting\, en plein air\, which is an immediate\, time-sensitive approach to outdoor painting. \n  \nAs part of his exhibition\, Walling will conduct a painting demonstration on Saturday\, July 30\, 1 p.m. at the gallery. \n  \nThe show runs through Aug. 4. For more information\, please call 231/334-3179. \n
