DESCRIPTION:Grand Rapids artist Jim Markle exhibits new views of the Sleeping Bear Dunes and Glen Arbor Aug. 22-28 at Center Gallery\, 6023 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. A reception opens the show Aug. 22\, 6 p.m. \n  \nMarkle began pastel painting this iconic landscape a decade ago. “I spend a lot of time exploring the environment for interesting compositions and lighting conditions\,” he said. Markle typically paints in early morning or late afternoon “when low sun creates very interesting light and color in the environment.” Markle makes plein air studies in the field\, which he finishes in his Grand Rapids studio. \n  \nFor more information\, please call 231/334-3179.

DESCRIPTION:Photos of Lake Huron\, taken during a family vacation\, caused portrait painter Charles Pompilius to consider a new direction for his work. The Ferndale resident talks about how he explored this mid-career transition during his Glen Arbor Art Association (GAAA) artist-residency on Aug. 28\, 7:30 p.m.\, Glen Arbor Art Association\, 6031 S. Lake St.\, Glen Arbor. \nThe GAAA Artist-In-Residence (AIR) program provides artists with two-week residencies. Pompilius’s residency began Aug. 17. AIRs use this time to focus on aspects of their practice without interruption. A presentation is scheduled at the end of each residency. Pompilius will talk about his “lakescapes” and show some of the plein air sketches and paintings\, which will serve as reference for larger compositions. \nThe AIR presentation is open to the public without charge.
